2017-2018 School Year Start Times

With opening of West Clermont High School and West Clermont Middle School we knew there would be an increased demand on traffic in the area of the two schools and on bus transportation.  To help with the increased traffic in the area, Clough Pike will be widened between McMann Road, and Bach-Buxton Road.  The construction is currently underway and is scheduled to be completed by June 30th.  Additionally, West Clermont Middle School will begin the day at 7:00am and West Clermont High School will begin the day at 7:45am to allow the middle school traffic to filter out before the high school traffic arrives.

To overcome transportation issues such as geography, the length of the routes, and the ability of a bus to complete the middle school route and then get to their elementary route the district has to absorb 8 buses to make sure they can make the run to West Clermont Middle School and then turn around and make their elementary routes.  To accommodate this, Brantner Elementary will be moved to being a late starting school beginning with the 2017-2018 school year.  The school day at Brantner will now run from 9:20am – 3:55pm.

Brantner will join Holly Hill, Merwin,  Summerside, Willowville, and Withamsville Tobasco as late starting schools.  Both Amelia Elementary and Clough Pike Elementary will still begin the day at 8:20am.

A Message from Superintendent Kline

Over the course of the next few weeks, the State will release report cards for school districts across Ohio.  For the most part, these “grades” are for assessments that were taken over the course of the 2013-14 and 2014-15 school years.

3rd grade Rock Cycle

3rd grade students modeled the rock cycle with laffy taffy.

  1. Igneous Rock- 3 separate "rocks"
  2. Sedimentary Rock- laffy taffy stacked on top of each other to show layers

100 days of school in 1st grade

The first grade students celebrated the 100th day of school by participating in many fun filled events revolving around the number 100.  They began their day by making a crown representing  100 jewels to show they were 100 days smarter.  Throughout the rest of the day, the children created a gumball machine with 100 gumballs, used their problem solving strategies to create a tower of 100 cups, created ice cream cones representing the 10 tens is equivalent to 100, used hershey kisses to find numbers on the 100th chart, rolled dice with a partner to see who could reach the number 100 first, and created 3 different structures using 3 types of manipulatives; pattern blocks; counting cubes; marshmallows and toothpicks.

100 Days of Kindergarten

Kindergarten celebrated the 100th day by practicing their counting skills by counting to 100 by 10s. We also made fun hats that showed that they were 100 days "brighter."

As they were working on their posters, they practiced using pencils (chop sticks) to pick up pinto beans. This demonstration engaged students in a discussion about how people in different countries may do many things differently than we do in our culture, but their differences should be accepted and celebrated, not criticized!

4th grade White Table

As fourth graders entered Mrs. Arnold’s class today, they noticed an addition to the room---a small white clothed table.  The white clothed table honored the men and women who serve in America’s armed forces.  Students learned of the symbolism of the items on the table after reading the book, America's White Table by Margot Theis Raven.

The small table with a white cloth represented a soldier's pure heart when he or she answers this country's call to duty.  A lemon slice and grains of salt on a plate showed a captive soldier's bitter fate and tears of families waiting for loved ones to return.  An empty chair at the table represented the missing soldiers. A black napkin symbolized the sorrow of captivity.  A glass represented the meal that won't be eaten.  A white candle on the table stands for peace, and a red rose in a vase tied with a red ribbon represented the hope that all our missing will return someday.

In addition to reading the book, students learned about the history behind Veteran’s Day, talked about the branches of the military, and listed the characteristics that make a veteran a true hero.  Finally, they composed opinion essays about the qualities they felt make Veterans a hero.  Look for their essays hanging in the fourth grade hallway.

5th grade

In 5th grade today all of the students were given the chance to practice using Science Process Skills with gummy worms and gummy bears.  A few of the skills the students practiced were: they measured their worms length, compared their masses to the mass of gummy bears, predicted how many segments each gummy worm had, and built clay models of their worms and then compared the two.  The kids even had to take some of their worms home to see how they would react in water overnight.  Of course, the kids were allowed to eat some of the candy after the lab. :)  Every one had a great time!

1st grade

Mrs. Mack's 1st grade wrote letters to the veterans at the Georgetown Veterans Home and other veterans that the class knew back in November.  The response was so positive that we decided to do another project that would make people smile.  We made over 120 scarfs for the people who live in the Georgetown Veterans Home and other nursing homes.  Many of the kids took material home and it became a family project.  We also designed cards with warm and fuzzy messages.  Two of the girls actually made poems with their families.  We took the designed cards and put one of the two poems on the backside of the cards.  The pictures show the scarfs and cards and they are all ready for delivery.

Veteran's Day at WV

Fourth graders were read a book called America's White Table in honor of Veteran's Day.  The book discussed the sybolism of  a white table that  has been set across America in mess halls and at military events to honor America’s Armed Forces, especially those missing in action and those held prisoner of war.  It is a solitary, small table where no one will ever sit.  The small table with a white cloth honors a soldier's pure heart when he or she answers this country's call to duty.  A lemon slice and grains of salt on a plate show a captive soldier's bitter fate and tears of families waiting for loved ones to return.  An empty chair at the table represents the missing soldiers. A black napkin symbolizes the sorrow of captivity. A glass represents the meal that won't be eaten. A white candle is on the table for peace and a red rose is in a vase tied with a red ribbon for the hope that all our missing will return someday.

Students shared reasons about why it is important to honor, admire, and respect our veterans and wrote thoughtful essays to be displayed in the hall.

Art class at WV

Students today learned all about jellyfish and how to create great realistic looking jellyfish in a very simple way. Students painted half circles with watered down tempera paint and then lifted up their papers to form their tentacles with the dripping paint. Students discovered how if they turned their paper the tentacles would flow in that direction.

Once painting was complete students knew we would finish our pictures tomorrow when our papers had had time to dry. So for the rest of class they practiced drawing all sorts of ocean creatures on their papers.

Tomorrow students will use crayons, markers and cut paper to decorate their ocean scene. Students will add all sorts of animals, plants, rocks and corrals to their pictures tomorrow. We will also learn how to draw realistically like famous artist Robert Wyland. We will learn how to draw by putting simple shapes together to form more complex shapes.

4th grade Mrs. Arnold's Class

Students in Mrs. Arnold 4th Grade Writing class have been practicing their keyboarding skills on a free web based site called BBC Dance Mat Typing.  Students are learning how to hold their fingers properly starting with the home row keys and working their way through the levels.  After several weeks of practice, students were ready to test their keyboarding skills by composing a paragraph about their Halloween costumes directly on the computer.  Mrs. Arnold was able to create this assignment using the Study Island software purchased by the PTO.   Once students were finished typing, they submitted their paragraphs on line through the Study Island Program.

Here is Nick McEwan’s unedited paragraph:

I want to be a ninja for Halloween because I think ninja's are cool. One reason I want to be a ninja Is because they do all kind's of flip's and I think that is cool. The second reason  I want to be a ninja is because they wear mask's and that is cool. My ninja costume is going to be red and I will carry a sythe for my weapon. I am excited for Halloween and I can't wait for it to get here because I like candy!

Donations from former students

Former WV students Madison Brown and Haven Dwyer are off to 6th grade this year.  Madison and Haven have done joint birthdays since 1st grade.  Every year they think of something they haven't done before.  This year, they were having trouble coming up with a theme they hadn't done before.  I think it was then that they decided to do something to help others.  They both decided to ask their party guests to bring school supplies to donate,  rather than gifts.  Once collected, they decided the best place to donate was Willowville.  Thank you Madison and Haven!!

Quick Q & A regarding snow day

Q. Will any more Blizzard Bags be assigned?
A. No, the state allowed schools to assign up to three Blizzard Bags. WCSD has assigned all three BBs, with the last one due to teachers, tomorrow, Tuesday, March 4.
Q. Will the state allow more calamity days?
A. Unsure. The Senate and House haven't yet reached an agreement on Gov. Kasich's call to increase in the number of calamity days beyond the five days schools are allotted. The bill has been sent to a joint conference committee, which may take a couple more weeks, which leaves us unsure.

Q. Will we have to make up days at the end of the school year?
A. As things stand right now, Yes. The state allows five calamity days annually, plus three Blizzard Bags days = eight days. Today is our ninth day closed due to snow. We have to make up one day at the end of the year.
PENDING LEGISLATION: The House of representatives passed a bill one week prior to the Senate passing a different bill. Sounds like the House and Senate need to get it together. You might want to contact your favorite legislator.

Schools are CLOSED for Monday, March 3.

STATUS UPDATE: Closed.  Blizzard bags that are due today, will be due tomorrow.  Today is a great day to get those done! Stay warm and safe.

Penny Wars

Kindergarten Students cheer as Rocco DeMartino adds pennies to the KG jar.  Today was the last day for the Penny Wars and for turning in the Jump for Heart envelopes!  Penny jars were taken to the bank immediately after the last lunch today, and we will let you know as soon as we have the grade level totals!

All money collected from the Penny Wars will be split between the American Heart Association, and the Katie Haumesser Foundation!

Schools evacuated today

Early this afternoon, Kentucky law enforcement received a 911 call indicating that there were bombs in all New Richmond Schools and Amelia Schools. Amelia Elementary, Amelia Middle School, Amelia High School, Holly Hill and Merwin Elementary were evacuated. Fire and law enforcement officials checked each building. Keeping the safety and security of our staff and students as our top priority, we kept them out of the buildings until we received a green light from law enforcement and police. Teachers stayed with their students until we received clearance to reenter our building. The District’s security system and crisis process worked well. Currently, students are back in school, and everyone is safe

Levy Options Survey - expires July 25

The Board of Education is considering a property tax levy for the purpose of operations in November, 2013. Last month, a menu of options was presented to the community. In an effort to "build" a levy that the community will support the Board asked the community to review the menu of options and submit their opinions. After reviewing community feedback the Board has narrowed the levy options to three. The good news is that because the state is increasing funding for West Clermont, the Board was able to reduce the base millage amount to 2.9 mills.

The Board is interested in your opinion. Click here to take the survey.

If you have trouble accessing the survey, email Debbie Alberico. A survey will be emailed to you. Board is interested in your opinion.

Smarter spending is key to efficiency

The West Clermont Local School District is doing business differently. Superintendent Keith Kline said that the district has four areas of operations in which to concentrate. “In order to move forward, we must focus on four key areas: Safe, secure and inviting schools; 21st century teaching and learning; Communication; and Financial stability."

Despite $7.4 million in reductions including 92 teaching positions, 32 support staff positions, and seven administrative positions, the district’s five year forecast reflects a $5.2 million deficit in the year 2014.

“It’s important to me as the leader of the district to make sure that we’re using our resources as effectively as possible,” Kline said. “For that reason, we will tighten – up operations to improve efficiency.“ Kline’s plan includes $1.5 million in reductions for the upcoming school year.
