2017-2018 School Year Start Times

With opening of West Clermont High School and West Clermont Middle School we knew there would be an increased demand on traffic in the area of the two schools and on bus transportation.  To help with the increased traffic in the area, Clough Pike will be widened between McMann Road, and Bach-Buxton Road.  The construction is currently underway and is scheduled to be completed by June 30th.  Additionally, West Clermont Middle School will begin the day at 7:00am and West Clermont High School will begin the day at 7:45am to allow the middle school traffic to filter out before the high school traffic arrives.

To overcome transportation issues such as geography, the length of the routes, and the ability of a bus to complete the middle school route and then get to their elementary route the district has to absorb 8 buses to make sure they can make the run to West Clermont Middle School and then turn around and make their elementary routes.  To accommodate this, Brantner Elementary will be moved to being a late starting school beginning with the 2017-2018 school year.  The school day at Brantner will now run from 9:20am – 3:55pm.

Brantner will join Holly Hill, Merwin,  Summerside, Willowville, and Withamsville Tobasco as late starting schools.  Both Amelia Elementary and Clough Pike Elementary will still begin the day at 8:20am.

ID Project for 7th Grade

Amelia Middle School is organizing a program with our 7th grade students called the ID Project. The purpose of the ID Project is to promote positive mental health by providing students an opportunity to develop closer relationships with their peers, and break down the barriers they have towards each other. If students do not feel their peers treat each other well, attending school becomes difficult. The ID Project not only promotes empathy among the students; they also discuss topics such as self-awareness, friendship, influences, and future plans. Each of these components helps to support and promote positive mental health development. This program is very similar to the Be the Difference program that the high schools ran, but it is adapted for middle school students.  This program is scheduled for March 22 and this will be an all day event.  For more information feel free to look at the website http://thechangepoint.com/programs.html

If you have any questions, please contact Amelia Middle School at 947-7500.

A.L.I.C.E Safety Drill:

Dear Amelia Middle School Parents:

This morning Amelia Middle School conducted a lockdown safety drill. Teachers shared age appropriate information that demonstrated different steps students should follow, depending upon the situation:

  • Evacuating the building
  • Barricading, if staying in a classroom
  • Strategies to use if confronted by an intruder

This training is crucial to prepare all Amelia Middle School students in the unlikely event where an armed intruder enters the building. We made every attempt to conduct the training in a manner that was sensitive to the educational needs of our students.

Feel free to contact me if you have questions regarding the training, the drill, or about A.L.I.C.E. in general.

Sincerely,

Mr. Martini

PRESS RELEASE - AMELIA MIDDLE/HIGH

This afternoon, Amelia High School received a called in bomb threat. As is our regular protocol in such a situation, both the Amelia High School and Amelia Middle School were evacuated so that the Clermont County Sheriff’s Department could assess the situation.  Students were held outside until the Sheriff’s Department was able to clear both the High School Performing Arts Center and the Middle School Gym.  Students were quickly returned to safe and warm locations until we could dismiss students to parents. High School drivers were permitted to leave in their cars after they signed out and buses were available to keep students out of the cold.

Amelia High School, Middle School and the West Clermont Local School District take the safety and security of our students and staff very seriously.  I appreciate the efforts of the Clermont County Sheriff’s Office for their quick and thorough response, all of our staff members for making sure our students were safe and our parents and community for their patience and understanding as we worked to make sure everyone stayed safe and warm.

While lines for parent pickup lines were long, we appreciate everyone’s cooperation as we connected parents and students.  All students and staff were safe throughout the situation and all students are home or on their way home at this time.

What is cross country? A typical cross country race at the middle school level is 2 miles of mixed terrain (wooded trails, fields, running tracks, and some concrete/asphalt). In cross country, you run as an individual, trying to improve upon your own times, but it is also a team sport.

I encourage that you attend the May 13th meeting if you are interested. I look forward to watching "our kids" compete!

Baron Games...

Our first ever BARON GAMES was a success. Students and staff had a great time! Many thanks to all who helped to make the event a success.
"May the odds be ever in your favor..."  Although I am quite certain that students at Amelia Middle School do not need luck to PASS the OAA TEST! :-)

Architecture By Children at Amelia Middle:

For the past several months students in Mrs. Hart's and Mr. Spangler's Enrichment classes have been participating in Architecture By Children (ABC), which is a design competition sponsored by the Cincinnati chapter of the American Institute of Architects. During ABC students worked with an architect to design buildings that could be built over Fort Washington Way near The Banks in Down Town Cincinnati. Students conducted research, brainstormed, created architectural drawings, designed and built models and wrote descriptions of their structures. The models and the written descriptions will be on display at the Down Town branch Cincinnati/Hamilton County Public Library this week. Architects and city planners from all over Greater Cincinnati will judge their entries and awards will be announced at a ceremony next Saturday.

Message from Superintendent Kline:

Early this afternoon, Kentucky law enforcement received a 911 call indicating that there were bombs in all New Richmond Schools and Amelia Schools. Amelia Elementary, Amelia Middle School, Amelia High School  and Merwin Elementary were evacuated. Fire and law enforcement officials checked each building. Keeping the safety and security of our staff and students as our top priority, we kept them out of the buildings until we received a green light from law enforcement and police. Teachers stayed with their students until we received clearance to reenter our building. The District’s security system and crisis process worked well. Currently, students are back in school, and everyone is safe.

Amelia Middle School Evacuation:

I wanted to inform our school community that this afternoon at approximately 1:00 pm, we evacuated the building due to a third party concern.  The concern was not specific to the Amelia Middle School, rather indicated two separate school districts.  I did not want to take the concern lightly, and decided to evacuate the building.  We worked closely with the sheriffs department and searched the building in order to ensure your child's safet.  Additional communications will be coming shortly from the district with more information.  I wanted you to hear from me first as I am sure that news travels fast.   Your children are safe in our care!  ~Mrs. Walker

October Lunch Menu:
Student Evacuation this Morning:
At approximately 8:50 am, the staff and administration detected an odor in a hallway at Amelia Middle School.  The fire department was called as a precautionary measure.  Students were evacuated from the building until the fire department determined that the building was clear and safe. The team determined that a faulty hand dryer was the cause of the odor.   Students re-entered the building at 9:30 am.  I addressed the students regarding the situation, reassured them that the building was safe and praised them for their behavior during the drill.  I certainly wanted to communicate with my AMS family regarding the event.  If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to contact me at walker_s2@westcler.org.

Incident Today:

Amelia Middle School Parents,

I wanted to take a moment to inform you of a situation which involved several students from Amelia Middle School and took place after school this afternoon.

During the afternoon bus route, a fight broke out between two students.  In an effort to ensure student safety, the bus driver pulled the bus into Withamsville Elementary where Union Township police officers responded. At this point, many details are still unclear but it appears that the fight was a result of an incident that took place between the two boys the night prior.  Both students were taken into police custody.  Administrative staff and Union Township Police Department are collaborating in a full investigation that will take place on Monday.

Matters such as this are always complex and disappointing for any community.  Rest assured that your children’s safety is our primary concern.  Following the investigation, full disciplinary actions will be enforced.  Feel free to contact me with with questions or concerns at walker_s2@westcler.org or 947-7500.

Sincerely,

Stephanie Walker

Board of Education meeting

The WCSD Board of Education meets Monday, July 29, 7:00 PM at the Union Township Civic Center. View the agenda on Board Docs.

Thank You

Thanks to everyone who participated in the Levy Options Survey. The Board of Education will use the information to determine the upcoming levy plan. The Board is expected to announce the plan at their meeting on Monday, July 29, 7:00 pm, at the Union Township Civic Center.

Levy Options Survey - expires July 25

The Board of Education is considering a property tax levy for the purpose of operations in November, 2013. Last month, a menu of options was presented to the community. In an effort to "build" a levy that the community will support the Board asked the community to review the menu of options and submit their opinions. After reviewing community feedback the Board has narrowed the levy options to three. The good news is that because the state is increasing funding for West Clermont, the Board was able to reduce the base millage amount to 2.9 mills.

The Board is interested in your opinion. Click here to take the survey.

If you have trouble accessing the survey, email Debbie Alberico. A survey will be emailed to you. Board is interested in your opinion.

*Levy Options UPDATE!

The Board of Education has narrowed November levy options to three (6.3 mills, 5.8 mills, 4.8 mills). To view the components of each option, click the "view all" button.

Remembering Austin Rowland

Dear Students, Parents, Staff and Friends of Amelia High School:

This is a sad time for many WCLSD students and staff.  As you probably know by now, one of our students,Amelia High School Sophomore Austin Rowland, has died from injuries he received when he was struck by a car, as he walked along the road side, on Thursday night.

Being mindful of the well - being of our students and staff, we will provide the opportunity for those who are impacted by Austin's death, to talk with counselors and other professionals, to help them cope with this loss.

If you think your child needs further assistance, please contact the counseling office at 513-947-7401.  We will do everything we can to help you obtain appropriate services for your child.

You may also check our school website for information about "talking with children about grief."

AMS Up-to Date Track Schedule:

AMS versus GEMS Coin War: March 10th - 13th:

As I have promoted over AMS social media sites last week, we are participating in a coin war against GEMS on Monday through Thursday of this week.  The money will be donated to the Ronald McDonald House and the Cincinnati Lymphoma and Leukemia Society.  The winning building will have the losing principal as a guest to be dressed in the winning school’s colors and paraded throughout the building.  I certainly would like to be on the winning end of this friendly competition.  With 960 students in the building, we could collect over $4,800 if every student donated $5.00 to our cause.  Check your penny banks, couch cushions, cup holders, change purses and pockets in order to donate to this great cause!

Happy Holiday Wishes...

Civic Duty Project:

Students in Team 7.2 (7th Grade) learned about Cincinnatus third quarter (a Roman general/farmer who Cincinnati is named for) in World Studies.  He is famous for carrying out his civic duty when his country called.  In the spirit of Cincinnatus, 40 students completed a “civic duty” project for various members of our community.  The theme for this project was “helping others,” and students chose tasks to perform.   Click on the link for more information:

Quick Q & A regarding snow day

Q. Will any more Blizzard Bags be assigned?
A. No, the state allowed schools to assign up to three Blizzard Bags. WCSD has assigned all three BBs, with the last one due to teachers, tomorrow, Tuesday, March 4.

Q. Will the state allow more calamity days?
A. Unsure. The Senate and House haven't yet reached an agreement on Gov. Kasich's call to increase in the number of calamity days beyond the five days schools are allotted. The bill has been sent to a joint conference committee, which may take a couple more weeks, which leaves us unsure.

Q. Will we have to make up days at the end of the school year?
A. As things stand right now, Yes. The state allows five calamity days annually, plus three Blizzard Bags days = eight days. Today is our ninth day closed due to snow. We have to make up one day at the end of the year.
PENDING LEGISLATION: The House of representatives passed a bill one week prior to the Senate passing a different bill. Sounds like the House and Senate need to get it together. You might want to contact your favorite legislator.

2014-15 Pay to Participate Fees

Friendly reminder:
Pay to Participate Fees are now $250 per athlete. Athletes playing in two or more sports will not pay more that $500 annually. There is no family cap.

This reduction was made possible because of the $3 million realized from salary and benefit concessions made by employees, districtwide cost-containment, and a small increase in state funding. See RESOLUTION 14-37 – CHANGE 2014-2015 PAY TO PARTICIPATE FEE.

No School on Monday, March 3rd:

AMS Baron Bits:

Just a quick update from Amelia Middle School:

Halloween:   If your child chooses to participate, students are permitted to wear Halloween costumes on Thursday of this week.  This being said, there are certain rules that must be followed:  NO masks, NO face paint, costumes must be school appropriate and of appropriate dress code length.  We are looking forward to having a bit of fun on Halloween.

Fall Athletic Awards:  Mark your calendar.  The fall athletic awards will be held 7:00 pm on Thursday, November 14th in the middle school cafeteria.  We hope to see everyone in attendance in order to celebrate our student athletes.

Student Drop-off at Arrival:  Just a reminder that parents dropping students off in the morning should pull cars as far up in the drop-off circle as possible.  Our goal is to get as many cars off of Clough Pike during morning rush hour.  Please pay attention to the adults with flashlights directing you to do so.  I appreciate your support with this.

Report Cards:  Report cards will be finalized and on Progress Book for parent access on Friday.

If you have any questions, feel free to contact me at walker_s2@westcler.org.  Have a great week!

Box Tops Winners at AMS:

Congratulations to Mr. Spangler, Miss Dietrich, Mrs. Hart, Mr. Fogelson, Mr. Mathis, Mrs. Calico and Mrs. Capps whose first bell class brought in the most Box Tops during October or February. PTSO is combining all of the winners for a special “thank-you breakfast” on Thursday, April 10 during first bell. With the fall and spring Box Tops collections, our families have helped raise more than $1,000 for Amelia Middle. Many thanks to Meijer Eastgate for sponsoring this event.

Taking a Trip Back in Time...
Students from team 8-2 (the Buckeyes) spent their social studies core in boxes the size a slave would have on a ship during the Middle Passage.  Each box was 6'0" x 1'4", the average amount of space given to a male slave on a ship.  Many slaves would have another shelf of slaves 6 inches above them.  Slaves spent approximately 20 hours a day chained in this position.  The average journey from Africa to the Americas took six weeks.

During the class students listened to a portion of Sharon Draper's Copper Sun, a fictional account of a young African who is kidnapped and sold into slavery.  During the remainder of the bell, students learned facts about the slave trade and American slavery.

Students honor and appreciate veterans

During the months of April and May students from Amelia Middle School, Amelia High School, Glen Este Middle School, and Merwin Elementary wrote letters to veterans who will participate in the Honor Flight Program.  Honor Flight is a program that was established to allow veterans of WWII and the Korean War to visit their war memorials in Washington, D.C.  The veterans are given letters during a “mail call” during their returning flight from the memorials.

Sandy Phelps, seventh grade Social Studies teacher at Amelia Middle, coordinated the mail writing effort. A friend of Sandy’s, who volunteers for Honor Flight, set a goal of collecting 5000 letters for the veterans by June 1, 2013.  The letter writing efforts of the West Clermont students, their teachers, and friends produced 785 letters to add to the cause.  At last count, the goal of 5000 letters has been achieved!  Thank you to the teachers who took time to explain this worthy cause to their students and allowed them to write the letters.

For more information about Honor Flight in our area, visit www.honorflighttristate.org

Well Wishes for Mrs. Hart:

Dear Parents,

I am writing to inform our Amelia Middle School family that Mrs. Hart will not be able to finish this school year.  Mrs. Hart suffered an injury over the break which required surgery.

Ms. Amy Rodgers will be the long-term substitute teacher for the remainder of the 2013-2014 school.  Mrs. Rodgers has worked in the building during this school year and is familiar with the school, team and classroom.  I am confident in Ms. Rodger’s ability to provide a nurturing and academically challenging classroom environment in Mrs. Hart’s absence.

I would like to thank you for your compassion and understanding during this transition.  If your child is interested, they may drop cards off at the office and we will be sure to deliver them to Mrs. Hart.  I am sure that she would love to receive a few “get well” thoughts.

Sincerely,

Stephanie Walker

Smarter spending is key to efficiency

The West Clermont Local School District is doing business differently. Superintendent Keith Kline said that the district has four areas of operations in which to concentrate. “In order to move forward, we must focus on four key areas: Safe, secure and inviting schools; 21st century teaching and learning; Communication; and Financial stability."

Despite $7.4 million in reductions including 92 teaching positions, 32 support staff positions, and seven administrative positions, the district’s five year forecast reflects a $5.2 million deficit in the year 2014.

“It’s important to me as the leader of the district to make sure that we’re using our resources as effectively as possible,” Kline said. “For that reason, we will tighten – up operations to improve efficiency.“ Kline’s plan includes $1.5 million in reductions for the upcoming school year.

Mrs. Ford's Inspiration Board Activity:

As a culmination to reading A Whole New Mind by Daniel Pink, students in Mrs. Ford’s language arts class created an inspiration board incorporating all the six senses discuss in the text. They are: Design, Story, Symphony, Empathy, Play and Meaning.

An inspiration board is a collage of images, pictures and affirmations of dreams and desires. It can also be called a dream board, treasure map or vision map. Inspirational boards are a great way to make students feel positive, and are helpful in allowing students to envision goals and dreams.

Bystander to Upstander: Youth Leadership Summit:

On Wednesday, Feb. 26th, Trinity Stowell and Alyssa Carter, two 7th grade students along with  teacher Mr. Baughman attended the "Bystander to Upstander: Youth Leadership Summit" at The Center for Holocaust and Humanity Education in Kenwood. The day was filled with activities that centered around giving the students, all 7th and 8th graders, opportunities to learn about leadership, understanding, and finding their voice. Students participated in three activities that focused on educating them about standing up and challenged them to speak out. They also heard from keynote speaker Carl Wilkens, who was the only American to stay in Rwanda during the 1994 civil uprising and subsequent genocide. He spoke about helping others and standing in the face of adversity. Finally, Alyssa and Trinity came together with two students from GEMS to discuss and plan a course of action that they felt could be a positive way of instituting necessary change in our district. The day was extremely educational and eye-opening. Everyone involved had nothing but positive feedback at the end of the summit!

This year, with the help of our teachers, staff, parents, the PTSO and Everything Bagel we collected over 100 gifts for these families as well as provided each family with a complete holiday meal.

The generosity of the groups of people listed helped bring smiles to the faces of 28 children and their families. What a great group of people we have in our school and community to help when others are in need. We are looking forward to another successful Giving Tree in 2014.

Baron Bits for the Week of 1-13-14

AMS Students and Families,

I hope that everyone had a wonderful weekend and are ready for the week ahead.

I wanted to take a moment to let you know that Mr. Pitzer, Gateway to Technology Teacher, is unable to be at work due to medical issues.  At this time, it looks as though he will not be able to return this school year.  Without disclosing private information, he certainly could use your positive thoughts at this time.  For any student who might be interested in sending a “get well” card, I know that it would be greatly appreciated.  If you are interested, drop the card off in the office and we will make sure that it gets to Mr. Pitzer.   Let’s see if we can make Mr. Pitzer’s day!

I have been working with the Oaks in order to find a consistent person to cover Mr. Pitzer’s schedule.  Mr. Kyle Seibert has been hired and will begin on Tuesday.

Son of the Plot Assignment

Last fall, Ms. Thacker's 7th graders at Amelia Middle School were commissioned to design a brand new roller coaster for Kings Island! The CEO of Kings Island, Mr. Thrillseeker, has decided to base all of Kings Island's roller coasters on popular novels. The talented students worked tirelessly, reading a plethora of exciting novels, and creating a slew of extraordinary roller coaster designs. Some students chose to create a digital roller coaster simulation, while others created a 3-D model, or a 2-D design. Students presented their designs and were pelted with a variety of questions from the audience. Mr. Thrillseeker is already planning to turn several of the students' detailed designs into action packed rides that chronicle the 5 stages of the plot of each of the novels. Here are photographs of some of the designs.

Families came to look at projects and participate in several student demonstrations.

National Mix It Up at Lunch Day

On Tuesday, October 29 students at Amelia Middle School participated in the National Mix It Up at Lunch Day. This day is sponsored by Teaching Tolerance, an organization who works to increase tolerance and break down barriers that separate ...individuals from one another. The day is described as, “A simple call to action; take a new seat in the cafeteria” (teachingtolerance.org) . The theme this school year was Superheroes, which was to encourage students to realize they all have the ability to work for the common good and make this world a better place. The goal of the day was for each student to meet someone new and learn something about them.

Our administrators, teachers, campus coordinators and other staff members were crucial in making this day a success. We had such a positive adult presence in the lunchroom it was contagious to the students. Music, candy, and great conversations helped Amelia Middle School to break down barriers and build a welcoming and inclusive school community. Today was a great day to be an Amelia Baron.
