Dismissal Today (3/1/16)

Tuesday, March 1, 2016

Dear Amelia Tiger Families,

Shortly before dismissal today, we had a medical concern with a student so I asked for medical personnel to come and provide assistance to make sure everything was okay. I know that many of you were worried when you pulled into school at dismissal and saw an ambulance here, especially with the tragic incident at another school in Ohio yesterday.

Thankfully, everything with the student turned out to be okay. I care about each and every Amelia Tiger, so I always err on the side of caution when it concerns a student's health or safety.

As always, if you have questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to let me know!

Yours in service,

Mr. Riel, Principal
Mrs. Webber, Assistant Principal

First Week Update

Friday, August 21, 2015

Amelia Parents,

Happy first week of school!  It was an amazing week with our amazing students. Thank you for sharing them with us each day!

I want to update everyone on how our bus transportation is going. We totally revamped our dismissal procedures today (Friday) and we were able to get the afternoon buses rolling a lot sooner. Please let me know how we did!

We are committed to getting the buses safely out the door by shortly after 3 PM each day. We're almost there! Again, thank you for your patience as we continue to work with the transportation department to make sure your children arrive home safely and on time each day.

We know that our midday kindergarten drop-off needs to continue to improve. I spoke with the transportation department this afternoon and we are committed to finding ways we can accomplish that together. Next week, all of our students should be arriving at home on time. If not, I want to know so I can fix it!

We can't wait to share with you all the wonderful things your children will accomplish this year. It truly is going to be the #BestYearYet!

Have a wonderful weekend. Thanks for a great first week of school! As always, let us know how we can serve you.

Yours in service,

Mr. Riel

Start and end times for the 2014-15 school year:

Quick Q & A regarding snow day

Q. Will any more Blizzard Bags be assigned?
A. No, the state allowed schools to assign up to three Blizzard Bags. WCSD has assigned all three BBs, with the last one due to teachers, tomorrow, Tuesday, March 4.
Q. Will the state allow more calamity days?
A. Unsure. The Senate and House haven't yet reached an agreement on Gov. Kasich's call to increase in the number of calamity days beyond the five days schools are allotted. The bill has been sent to a joint conference committee, which may take a couple more weeks, which leaves us unsure.

Q. Will we have to make up days at the end of the school year?
A. As things stand right now, Yes. The state allows five calamity days annually, plus three Blizzard Bags days = eight days. Today is our ninth day closed due to snow. We have to make up one day at the end of the year.
PENDING LEGISLATION: The House of representatives passed a bill one week prior to the Senate passing a different bill. Sounds like the House and Senate need to get it together. You might want to contact your favorite legislator.

Keeping the safety and security of our staff and students as our top priority, we kept them out of the buildings until we received a green light from law enforcement and police. Teachers stayed with their students until we received clearance to reenter our building. The District’s security system and crisis process worked well. Parents:  As you know, Amelia Elementary is committed to ensuring your child's safety while they are under our care.  Knowing how to respond quickly and efficiently in a crisis is critical to everyone's safety.  Because of this, I wanted to let you know that this afternoon (November 26th) we had a NON-EMERGENCY lockdown drill at Amelia Elementary.  This drill is required by Ohio law (ORC 3737.73 - D).  The students and the staff did an outstanding job of following our crisis protocol.  I pledge to continue to work with local law enforcement and emergency personnel to fine-tune and adjust our crisis plan based upon their feedback.  As always, your child's safety is our number one priority.

Yours in service,

Mr. Jeffrey Riel

Levy Options Survey - expires July 25

The Board of Education is considering a property tax levy for the purpose of operations in November, 2013. Last month, a menu of options was presented to the community. In an effort to "build" a levy that the community will support the Board asked the community to review the menu of options and submit their opinions. After reviewing community feedback the Board has narrowed the levy options to three. The good news is that because the state is increasing funding for West Clermont, the Board was able to reduce the base millage amount to 2.9 mills.

The Board is interested in your opinion. Click here to take the survey.

If you have trouble accessing the survey, email Debbie Alberico. A survey will be emailed to you. Board is interested in your opinion.

*Levy Options UPDATE!

The Board of Education has narrowed November levy options to three (6.3 mills, 5.8 mills, 4.8 mills). To view the components of each option, click the "view all" button.

Board seeks community input on levy options

A recent Board of Education meeting featured Superintendent Keith Kline's presentation outlined how much it would cost to restore transportation, elementary art, music, and physical education; all day - every day kindergarten; and, operational modifications for safety and security reasons.

Treasurer Alana Cropper presented the base amount needed to make-up for inflation. Each option presented by Dr. Kline was added to the base amount.

We hope that you will review the options and send comments by clicking on the link in the story below.

Kindergarten Graduation "B" Session:

Congratulations to Amelia Elementary's Tuesday/Thursday kindergartners for graduating today.  We can't wait to see you in first grade!

AE Flying Pig Marathon:

We can't believe that it's already time for the Flying Pig Kids Marathon!  The following information will help everyone have a great event on Saturday:

  • Amelia Elementary will be in the 4th wave on Saturday (May 4th) and we should start our walk/run at approximately 12:20pm.
  • We will all meet at the starting line at approximately 11:30 which is at Second Street and Joe Nuxhall way (outside Great American Ballpark).
  • Look for the Amelia Elementary sign.
  • T-shirts, bibs and maps will be coming home with your student today or Thursday.
5th Grade Camp Kern:

The fifth grade students will be leaving for Camp Kern Tuesday, March 26.  The Camp Kern experience is three days and two nights of outdoor education.  Students stay in cabins and will participate in a variety of hands on learning experiences covering many science and history topics.  These activities cover Pioneer Life, Native Americans, Ecology, Survival Skills, Team Building, and much, much more!

Current Student SnapCode Verification

In preparation for the 2018-2019 school year, current student Snapcode verification information will be sent to families by email and by regular mail to the student's home address.  Snapcode verification must be completed and submitted in order for your child to receive their schedule or to be placed on a class list for 18-19 school year.

Open enrolled students will not receive their Snapcode information until they have been approved for open enrollment for the 2018-2019 school year.  Please contact our Central Enrollment Department at 943-5042 with any questions.

2017-2018 School Year Start Times

With opening of West Clermont High School and West Clermont Middle School we knew there would be an increased demand on traffic in the area of the two schools and on bus transportation.  To help with the increased traffic in the area, Clough Pike will be widened between McMann Road, and Bach-Buxton Road.  The construction is currently underway and is scheduled to be completed by June 30th.  Additionally, West Clermont Middle School will begin the day at 7:00am and West Clermont High School will begin the day at 7:45am to allow the middle school traffic to filter out before the high school traffic arrives.

To overcome transportation issues such as geography, the length of the routes, and the ability of a bus to complete the middle school route and then get to their elementary route the district has to absorb 8 buses to make sure they can make the run to West Clermont Middle School and then turn around and make their elementary routes.  To accommodate this, Brantner Elementary will be moved to being a late starting school beginning with the 2017-2018 school year.  The school day at Brantner will now run from 9:20am – 3:55pm.

Brantner will join Holly Hill, Merwin,  Summerside, Willowville, and Withamsville Tobasco as late starting schools.  Both Amelia Elementary and Clough Pike Elementary will still begin the day at 8:20am.

It’s a fact that students who attend school regularly learn more and are more successful in school than students who do not. Parents who make regular school attendance a priority also are helping their children learn to accept responsibility. And that’s an important lesson for a successful life. Attendance patterns are formed early in life. Children who develop good attendance habits in the early grades will be more likely to continue them throughout their school career. That’s important, because students who miss school miss out on carefully planned sequences of instruction. They miss out on active learning experiences and class participation. They miss out on the opportunity to ask questions. They are more likely to fall behind. And they are more likely to drop out.

What Parents Can Do:

1. Let your child know that you expect him/her to attend school every day. Explain that, just as you have a job, it’s her job to go to school and learn.

2. Set a time for doing homework each evening and a time for going to bed. Unfinished homework and too little sleep are common reasons why parents hear the words, “I don’t feel good,” on school mornings.

3. Get involved with your child’s school. When she sees you in the halls or the classrooms he or she will understand that school is important.

Letter from Mrs. Walker:

Families of Amelia Elementary,

It is with heartfelt words that I write to inform you that at tonight’s board meeting I was named as the new principal of Amelia Middle School beginning the 2013-14 school year.

I am excited about the new challenge yet sad to be leaving the place that I have come to love during the past seven years.  During this time, I have had the privilege of working with many wonderful children, families and educators… all of which hold a special place in my heart.

I would like to thank you for the opportunity to serve you, your children and this outstanding school community.  I hope that you know I am especially proud of our students.  I look forward to hearing great things about their accomplishments as they continue through their elementary school experience.  Know that I will be looking forward to working with your children yet again as they transition to middle school.

Elementary Schools now open longer

The doors of West Clermont elementary schools will remain open a little longer each day. In addition, the buildings will begin offering limited evening hours. In the wake of budget constraints, each of the district’s eight elementary schools now close daily at 4 p.m.

However, the West Clermont Local School District Board of Education voted unanimously March 11 to keep the buildings open for administration, faculty and staff until 5 p.m. daily. Board member Denise Smith said the additional hour for faculty to be in the building will be a benefit.  More
