All West Clermont Schools are CLOSED Friday 2/8

After receiving a definitive processional route map from the Clermont County Sheriff’s Department for Detective Bill Brewer’s funeral it has been determined that there will be numerous road closures and for several hours during times that will directly impact the dismissal times at our elementary schools.  Given this development, school will be cancelled for all students within the West Clermont Schools this Friday, February 8, 2019.  We continue to extend our deepest condolences to the family of Detective Brewer and the Clermont County Sheriff’s Department and are proud to assist and support them during this very difficult time.

The F.L.O.W. program scheduled for Tuesday, May 16th has been canceled.

2017-2018 School Year Start Times

With opening of West Clermont High School and West Clermont Middle School we knew there would be an increased demand on traffic in the area of the two schools and on bus transportation.  To help with the increased traffic in the area, Clough Pike will be widened between McMann Road, and Bach-Buxton Road.  The construction is currently underway and is scheduled to be completed by June 30th.  Additionally, West Clermont Middle School will begin the day at 7:00am and West Clermont High School will begin the day at 7:45am to allow the middle school traffic to filter out before the high school traffic arrives.

To overcome transportation issues such as geography, the length of the routes, and the ability of a bus to complete the middle school route and then get to their elementary route the district has to absorb 8 buses to make sure they can make the run to West Clermont Middle School and then turn around and make their elementary routes.  To accommodate this, Brantner Elementary will be moved to being a late starting school beginning with the 2017-2018 school year.  The school day at Brantner will now run from 9:20am – 3:55pm.

Brantner will join Holly Hill, Merwin,  Summerside, Willowville, and Withamsville Tobasco as late starting schools.  Both Amelia Elementary and Clough Pike Elementary will still begin the day at 8:20am.

Weekly Message from the Principal

May 4

Kindergarten B attends school this Friday.

We are in the final week for OAA assessments.  Students have worked hard and attendance has been excellent!  We are hoping for perfect attendance on testing days again this week.  5th Grade Math is Tuesday, 3rd Grade Math is Wednesday, and 5th Grade Science is Thursday.  This year the tests have to be packed and shipped by on Friday so the make-up schedule is tight.

Next week students will work on their Mother’s Day flower pot project.  Each class has been scheduled to attend.  The PTO has asked parents to send in $1 to help with the costs.

The newsletter was carried home with students on last Thursday.  Please read the schedule for end of the year programs and spirit week starting May 12.  The newsletter is also available on this website.

Tuesday is once again election day.  Since Merwin is a polling site, all students will eat lunch in their classrooms with the exception of Mrs. Shebesta and Mrs. Hertel’s classes who will eat on the stage due to 5th grade testing.

Friday the last interim report for the year will be released electronically.  Please call school if you need assistance.

Daily I receive reports of speeding cars on Gaskins Road at arrival and dismissal.  Please drive safely and do not use cell phones when in the school area.

That’s it for this week; have a great week!

April 20, 2014

Happy Easter!  I hope you have enjoyed the three day weekend and beautiful weather.

I have been asked by parents to remind you that children, and some adults, are walking in the street or on the wrong side of the street at dismissal.  This creates a dangerous situation for walkers.

Monday is Rodeo Day during skills group.  Children with perfect attendance and honor roll will bring home certificates.

I am asking that all students who have unserved detentions to please serve them this Tuesday morning at 8:00.

Remember that OAA tests will begin on April 29 for students in grades 3-5.  Students carried home letters on Wednesday.  Please ask for it if you didn’t receive it.  There is important information on the back that will assist you on testing week.

That’s it for this week.  Have a great week!

Quick Q & A regarding snow day

Q. Will any more Blizzard Bags be assigned?
A. No, the state allowed schools to assign up to three Blizzard Bags. WCSD has assigned all three BBs, with the last one due to teachers, tomorrow, Tuesday, March 4.

Q. Will the state allow more calamity days?
A. Unsure. The Senate and House haven't yet reached an agreement on Gov. Kasich's call to increase in the number of calamity days beyond the five days schools are allotted. The bill has been sent to a joint conference committee, which may take a couple more weeks, which leaves us unsure.

Q. Will we have to make up days at the end of the school year?
A. As things stand right now, Yes. The state allows five calamity days annually, plus three Blizzard Bags days = eight days. Today is our ninth day closed due to snow. We have to make up one day at the end of the year.
PENDING LEGISLATION: The House of representatives passed a bill one week prior to the Senate passing a different bill. Sounds like the House and Senate need to get it together. You might want to contact your favorite legislator.

Schools evacuated today

Early this afternoon, Kentucky law enforcement received a 911 call indicating that there were bombs in all New Richmond Schools and Amelia Schools. Amelia Elementary, Amelia Middle School, Amelia High School, Holly Hill and Merwin Elementary were evacuated. Fire and law enforcement officials checked each building. Keeping the safety and security of our staff and students as our top priority, we kept them out of the buildings until we received a green light from law enforcement and police. Teachers stayed with their students until we received clearance to reenter our building. The District’s security system and crisis process worked well. Currently, students are back in school, and everyone is safe

We will not know if that is going to happen until mid-to-late February.

When we return to school, the PTO has arranged for students to see the Art Reach production of the classic “The Christmas Carol.”  The assemblies will be held on December 5th.

Thank you to all families who supported the fundraiser.

On behalf of the staff and myself, wishing you and your family a happy Thanksgiving!

Weekly Message from the Principal

November  17

This week Kindergarten A comes to school on Friday.

Check out the information on the website about changes to the lunch payment program.

Friday we held the first drawings for Mustang Pride tickets.  Students whose tickets were drawn will eat lunch on the stage and play games.

Monday is the deadline for turning in orders for the second and last fundraiser of the school year. Orders will be delivered before Christmas.  As always, we appreciate your support.

Tuesday is Pizza with the Principal during lunches.

Tuesday students in 5th grade will go on a field trip to the Hockey Game.  This is a great experience with lots of math and science.  Students will leave school as soon as attendance is taken in the morning and will return around 1:30.  They will need a sack lunch.

Remember that the Campbell’s Label contest ends on November 26th.

If you are looking ahead, the Santa Shop will be the week of December 9.  Our students love to shop for Christmas gifts.  Information will be sent home soon!

Every day I have complaints from families who follow procedures for entering the parking lot at arrival and dismissal because there are so many of you coming in from the wrong way!  I have also been asked by families on Gaskins to not park in driveways or use them as a turn around.  Please follow the guidelines and help us be good neighbors.

Please send students to school with coats and make sure they know to wear them!

Have a great week!

Mustang Pride

Thanks to the leadership of Tracey Love and Meg O’Connor and the joint efforts of the Merwin staff, students now have an incentive to be “respectful and responsible” all day long.  MUSTANG PRIDE tickets are given out by staff members throughout the day when students are “caught” being respectful and responsible.  Once given a ticket, it goes into a collection of tickets for that grade level.  On Fridays, tickets are drawn for the opportunity to spend lunch period on the stage with a friend to eat lunch and play games.  If you have games you would like to contribute, contact Ms. Love or Mrs. O’Connor at school!

Important Changes to Lunch Accounts

This information is important to all parents who use online services for payments in student lunch accounts.  It comes from the Food Service Department.  They will be switching over to a new system of payment called EZ Pay.  The present online system, myschoolaccount.com, will not be available to make payments to accounts after December 6, however, students can continue using money previously deposited into their accounts.  Effective January 6, payments can be made in EZ Pay and all money left in the old accounts will be transferred over to the new accounts.  The link to EZ Pay is on the Merwin website.

New payment system to be installed in cafeterias

The Food Service Department is installing a new food payment program in the cafeterias during the Christmas break.
Starting on January 6, 2014, all payments for meal accounts will have to be made through EZ Pay. There will be a button on all school websites that will direct you to the EZ Pay page.
The last day for parents to make payments to the meal accounts on myschoolaccount.com will be December 6, 2013.  During the transition time, students will have to buy food with cash.

Families are not required to use EZ pay. Students may continue using cash to purchase food without a fee.
We are trying to keep any inconvenience to a minimum. Thanks, in advance, for your patience.

Merwin Honors Family Veterans

Veteran’s Day Assembly

It has become a tradition at Merwin to honor family and friends who are veterans of the armed services or are currently serving our nation.  Each year Merwin students send out invitations and prepare a ceremony.  Mrs. Corrie Graham, past Merwin music teacher, came back to lead the program.  School Resource Officer, Lt. Ed Dye from Pierce Twp. Police Department sang a duet with Mrs. Graham.  Students and staff also added to the celebration singing patriotic songs.  Merwin 5th graders recited information on each branch of the service.  The ceremony ended with the playing of taps by Hanna Opp and Matthew Rowland.  Hanna and Matt are seniors at Amelia High School.

West Clermont makes a difference...Thank You!
West Clermont families make a difference in the lives of the needy. The "Stuff the Bus" food drive was a huge success. The food drive started on Monday, Oct. 14 and ended on Friday, Oct. 18. In total, over 10,000 non-perishable food items were stuffed in the bus for Inter Parish Ministries. Recently, bus drivers delivered the food to the Inter Parish Ministries. Students, maintenance employees, bus drivers, teachers, administrators and superintendent unloaded the over 10,000 items that West Clermont School students collected for the Inter Parish Ministries. Pictures are here!

Congratulations to Glen Este High School Senior Andy Berger, and Amelia High School Senior Sam Casavant, for being named a 2014 National Merit Semi-Finalist! They represent less than one percent of the 1.5 million junior students nationwide who took the PSAT last year.

Berger has been a WC student since Kindergarten, attending Willowville Elementary and Glen Este Middle School.  He is a member of the GEHS football, wrestling and track teams.

Casavant attended Withamsville -Tobasco Elementary, Clough Pike Elementary and Glen Este Middle School. He is involved in National Honor Society, Academic Team, and Cross Country.  He is also a Boy Scout, currently working towards his Eagle Scout.

Both students will compete to become National Merit Finalist. Finalists are named in February.

Levy Options Survey - expires July 25

The Board of Education is considering a property tax levy for the purpose of operations in November, 2013. Last month, a menu of options was presented to the community. In an effort to "build" a levy that the community will support the Board asked the community to review the menu of options and submit their opinions. After reviewing community feedback the Board has narrowed the levy options to three. The good news is that because the state is increasing funding for West Clermont, the Board was able to reduce the base millage amount to 2.9 mills.

The Board is interested in your opinion. Click here to take the survey.

If you have trouble accessing the survey, email Debbie Alberico. A survey will be emailed to you. Board is interested in your opinion.

*Levy Options UPDATE!

The Board of Education has narrowed November levy options to three (6.3 mills, 5.8 mills, 4.8 mills). To view the components of each option, click the "view all" button.

West Clermont requests levy option feedback

UNION TWP. — West Clermont officials are working to narrow levy options using resident feedback.

OAA scores are back from the state!

Happy Summer! I have spent the last week working on OAA scores that have returned from the state. With the warning that scores at this point are just preliminary, Merwin students have again done a great job. Since the State of Ohio has changed the report card to letter grades, I really have no idea what our grade will be. However, I can tell you the percent of passage at this time. Again, these are all subject to change: 3rd grade reading had 91.9% passage and math 84.8% passage;

4th grade reading had 95.7% passage and math 87.3% passage;

5th grade reading had 85.3% passage and math 92.1% passage and science 86.5%.

That is a great way to end the year. Students will receive their scores the first day of school with their opening day packet. 5th graders will receive their scores from the AMS where I will take them when individual scores are delivered.

Save the evening of August 22nd for Open House. Book bag tags for transportation can be picked up any day at school starting August 6 between 8 and 3. If you can’t make it during the day, we will have one evening, August 13 from 6:30-7:30 where we will give out tags. Remember that ALL students must have book bag tags prior to the first day of school. Only parents or guardians may sign out the tags.

The office at Merwin will be closed the entire month of July. I will return on August 1st. If it is urgent, you can reach me by email. Thanks for another great year at Merwin!

2013 READYFEST WEST

Mark your calendars to save the date! 2013 Readyfest West will take place on Thursday, August 15 at Glen Este High School from 3:00-7:00 PM. This is a day when West Clermont Elementary School children on a free/reduced lunch program can obtain free school supplies. You must bring either your medical card or proof of income. If this is a problem, please call your case worker. YOu will also need to bring proof of residency in the form of a utility bill or a rental agreement. If your child is newly enrolled, you will need to provide proof of enrollment.

This event is sponsored by: Kiwanis Club of Union Township, Linda Bloom, Chair , Area Businesses, churches, and Fraternities.

This event is for students in grades K-5 only!

2013 Walk of Fame

We take great pride in traditions at Merwin. Each year we hold a Walk of Fame where retiring teachers lead the 5th graders in a parade through all students and staff. We line the sidewalks and allow students to pass through as we say goodbye and good luck to those who have helped us claim our "Excellent with Distinction" title for the last 5 years. Check out the pictures in the Photo Gallery from the 2013 Walk led this year by Linda Gabelman, Jane Kuebel, and Pam Hoffman! My how we will miss you and members of our 5th grade class!

2013 Volunteer Breakfast

Each year the Merwin staff has a breakfast for the many volunteeers who keep our school "Excellent". This year members of the PTO Board were given flowers and gift cards. A big thank you goes out to everyone who volunteers from running copies to events, we couldn't do it without you!

I managed to take a few pictures at the breakfast, but as usual, I started talking and missed most of the photo oportunities! Check out what I did take in the photo gallery!

Kindergarten End of Year Programs 2013

It is exciting for parents and staff to see the growth in our youngest students! Teachers Cheryl Thompson and Lisa Dodds enjoy watching their students put on a show at the end of the year. Take a look at the photo gallery as Merwin Kindergarteners strut their stuff.

5th Grade End of Year Awards

End of the year programs for 5th graders are always a mix of sad, hate to see them go, and glad, so proud of their accomplishments! Fifth grade teachers work hard to make the program reflect the respectful and responsible students they have become since they have entered Kindergarten. Check out the pictures in our photo gallery.

Community Input Sessions for levy options

The third and final Levy Options Community Input Session is scheduled for Tuesday, July 2, 6:30 pm at the Union Township Civic Center. The meeting begins with a very brief presentation of the options. Participants will then break out into small discussion groups. Each group will report the results of the discussions.

We hope to see you there. To review the options, click here.

Board seeks community input on levy options

A recent Board of Education meeting featured Superintendent Keith Kline's presentation outlined how much it would cost to restore transportation, elementary art, music, and physical education; all day - every day kindergarten; and, operational modifications for safety and security reasons.

Treasurer Alana Cropper presented the base amount needed to make-up for inflation. Each option presented by Dr. Kline was added to the base amount.

We hope that you will review the options and send comments by clicking on the link in the story below.

On Saturday, June 8th at 10:00 am  Merwin Elementary will host a story hour at Eastgate Mall starting at 10:00 – 11:00 am in the children’s play area located near JC Pennys.  In addition to listening to Merwin teacher Mrs. Greer read favorite children’s books aloud, Willis Music will have an instrument “petting zoo” for students to listen to, look at, touch and learn about musical instruments.    This event is FREE and open to children of all ages.  It will last about 1 hour.  We hope to see you there.

Special call command on June 3

June 3, 2013

I am calling with an important reminder.  All students must continue to have their book bags at school each day.  Last year many students did not bring book bags on the last day and therefore, they did not have a tag at dismissal.

Students will carry home the June Newsletter with their report cards.  There are many important reminders in there about next year, so you will want to keep it for reference.  Remember that the newsletter is also available on our website!

Please send in at least one item for the food drive.  It will end tomorrow and I would like to have a fair amount to send to the food pantry for the summer.  Thanks for thinking of others!

Items in the lost and found will be donated to charity on Friday.

Have a great week!

Students honor and appreciate veterans

During the months of April and May students from Amelia Middle School, Amelia High School, Glen Este Middle School, and Merwin Elementary wrote letters to veterans who will participate in the Honor Flight Program.  Honor Flight is a program that was established to allow veterans of WWII and the Korean War to visit their war memorials in Washington, D.C.  The veterans are given letters during a “mail call” during their returning flight from the memorials.

Sandy Phelps, seventh grade Social Studies teacher at Amelia Middle, coordinated the mail writing effort. A friend of Sandy’s, who volunteers for Honor Flight, set a goal of collecting 5000 letters for the veterans by June 1, 2013.  The letter writing efforts of the West Clermont students, their teachers, and friends produced 785 letters to add to the cause.  At last count, the goal of 5000 letters has been achieved!  Thank you to the teachers who took time to explain this worthy cause to their students and allowed them to write the letters.

For more information about Honor Flight in our area, visit www.honorflighttristate.org

Eastgate Mall partners with district for ‘Storytime’

Eastgate Mall has recently formed a partnership with West Clermont Schools to hold a monthly story time in the play area near JCPenney’s.

The partnership came from a desire to better connect the schools to the community.

“Research says that engaging school districts builds strong vibrant communities which support thriving businesses,” says Linda Austin, principal of Summerside Elementary. “Two-way communication with staff, parents, students, and residents of West Clermont Local schools is one of our top priorities.”

The Merwin library is closed for the year.  We are in the process of checking in books and sending out notices for late returns.  By Friday I ask that you either pay for outstanding books or return the book.  A big thank you goes out to the many volunteers who made opening our library a reality.  We also thank Sharon Parker for her continuous work to clean up and organize our library.

This week Amelia Library is sending Cara Frank to encourage participation in the summer reading program.  She will meet briefly with all grade levels.

Friday is the 5th Grade Farewell.  Immediately following the Farewell will be the Walk of Fame led this year by retiring staff Mrs. Gabelman, Mrs. Keubel, Mrs. Garrett, Mrs. Wehking, and Mrs. Hoffman.  Our 5th graders will follow with the opportunity to say goodbye to the rest of us!  Parents are invited to gather outside on the south side of the building.  Remember that all 5th graders need to wear their new “Middle School Bound” t-shirts on Friday.

All students who ordered yearbooks will receive them on Friday.

Change of date for Walk of Fame

Each year since I have been at Merwin we honor our exiting 5th graders and retiring teachers by holding the Walk of Fame.  This year I scheduled the event for June 5th which is the day before school ends for students.

The Walk of Fame takes only five minutes, but is a time when all Mustangs have a chance to say bye to their old teachers and retiring staff can do the same with all students.  We line up on both sides of the sidewalk and the retiring staff and 5th graders walk through the line.  It is a very moving event for staff and students.

Last week I realized that retiring teachers will have their last day on Friday, May 31st and are not permitted to participate on school grounds for 30 days.  Due to this, I have moved the Walk of Fame to 2:30 on Friday, May 31st.  You are welcome to join us!

Smarter spending is key to efficiency

The West Clermont Local School District is doing business differently. Superintendent Keith Kline said that the district has four areas of operations in which to concentrate. “In order to move forward, we must focus on four key areas: Safe, secure and inviting schools; 21st century teaching and learning; Communication; and Financial stability."

Despite $7.4 million in reductions including 92 teaching positions, 32 support staff positions, and seven administrative positions, the district’s five year forecast reflects a $5.2 million deficit in the year 2014.

“It’s important to me as the leader of the district to make sure that we’re using our resources as effectively as possible,” Kline said. “For that reason, we will tighten – up operations to improve efficiency.“ Kline’s plan includes $1.5 million in reductions for the upcoming school year.

Elementary Schools now open longer

The doors of West Clermont elementary schools will remain open a little longer each day. In addition, the buildings will begin offering limited evening hours. In the wake of budget constraints, each of the district’s eight elementary schools now close daily at 4 p.m.

However, the West Clermont Local School District Board of Education voted unanimously March 11 to keep the buildings open for administration, faculty and staff until 5 p.m. daily. Board member Denise Smith said the additional hour for faculty to be in the building will be a benefit.  More
