The tone and focus throughout our classrooms at Brantner is impressive! Students are engaged in meaningful work to gain literacy, math, social studies, and science skills throughout their day that are aligned with the Ohio State Standards. Our teachers are helping our students connect to early literacy skills through the use of key vocabulary found in quality texts, letter names, and sounds, and the exploration of how these all fit together to make complex words. Be sure to ask your child about the books they are exploring together in class and have fun listening to them share the sounds of letters in their world and the books they are reading in class and independently as they are eager to continue to make these connections!
Ms. Doyle’s class is focusing on vocabulary in the book, If you Give a Mouse a Cookie, by Laura Numerhoff. Our district adopted literacy resource, Collaborative Classroom, pulls high level vocabulary connections from quality texts to continue to build our students’ language skills through comprehension.
Watch this video of the book to see how these four, high level vocabulary words can be discussed through the story of the book, “generous, energetic, nuisance, exhausted!”
Mrs. Morris’ class is focused on a math skill, subitizing, in this lesson where students strengthen their estimation and counting skills by answering the question, “How many?”
Mrs. Flaherty’s homeroom is working on letter identification and sound as they cooperatively pass the letters in her circle time.
