What is Child Find?
Child Find is the process of locating, evaluating, and identifying children with disabilities who may be in need of special education and related services. Local school districts are required by federal and state laws to find children who may need special education services and related services.
What is a Disability in Ohio?
To be eligible simply means that your child has been found to need certain educational services because of one or more disabilities. The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) requires students with disabilities to receive special education and/or related services. To be considered a student with a disability under this law, your child must require special education and/or related services because of his or her disability in one or more of the following disability categories:
- Intellectual Disability
- Hearing Impairment
- Speech or Language Impairment
- Visual Impairment
- Emotional Disturbance
- Orthopedic Impairment
- Autism
- Traumatic Brain Injury
- Other Health Impairment
- Specific Learning Disability
- Deafness
- Deaf-Blindness
- Multiple Disabilities
- Developmental Delay
What is the purpose behind Child Find?
- To alert the public, parents and professionals to children who may have special needs
- To enable eligible children to receive the special education and related services that are needed
- To guarantee that school districts find children who may have disabilities and who otherwise may not have come to their attention
