Technology Update

December 13, 2016

Parents of West Clermont Middle School Students,

ONE TO ONE

Research has shown that students’ technology skills are dramatically enhanced when engaged in a “One to One” or “Technology Immersion” program. One Texas study found that, during their middle school years alone, students with previously little or no access to technology closed the gap in technology skills that existed between them and students who had access to technology for many years.

To ensure equal access for all West Clermont middle school students, the district provided each student of Amelia and Glen Este Middle Schools exclusive use of a district owned Chromebook computer shortly after the school year began. The devices were labeled with the student’s name and the room number of the classroom in which they are stored for charging overnight. When the computer is not in your child’s possession, it is locked in a charging cart.

Your student is the only individual that will use their Chromebook throughout the school year.

PROPER CARE

Of course, like any district resource, the student is required to care for the device and return it in the same condition in which it was issued, much like a text book. For this reason, beginning January 2, 2017, if a Chromebook is damaged, repair or replacement costs will be charged to the parents/guardians of the student responsible for the damage. Should you so choose, you have the option of purchasing Breakage Insurance for the device which will provide for one repair per year. The annual cost is $30 per device. Due to the time of year, the cost will be pro-rated for the remainder of the school year to just $15 per device. Breakage Insurance is applied to a specific Chromebook computer. This means, if you have multiple students enrolled in middle school at West Clermont, you would need to purchase insurance for each device that you wish to have covered. Should your child’s Chromebook not be covered by this optional insurance when it is damaged, the cost to you for repair is listed on Table 1., below.

CARRYING CASES

While backpacks are not permitted in the middle schools, the principals have made allowance for Chromebook cases to minimize the possibility of damage. A small carrying case suitable for an 11” device is acceptable. Cases should be equipped with a shoulder strap and provide adequate room for the Chromebook computer. While a basic cloth sleeve is preferable to no case at all, one that offers some measure of padding could save you costly repair charges. The district has arranged to make available an affordable option (just $18) for those of you who wish to take advantage of it, and an order form has been included for your convenience in ordering both insurance and/or the carrying case(s). /userfiles/922/my files/chrome book form.pdf?id=8475

Please return the order form and a personal check to school no later than Friday, January 6, 2017.

Insurance bought by Friday, January 6, 2017 will provide retroactive coverage as of January 2, 2017.
