“13 Reasons Why”

Dear Parents/Guardians:  Netflix has recently released a new TV series entitled “13 Reasons Why”. This show is based on the book of the same title by Jay Asher. It is a fictional account of a teenage character who commits suicide after a series of very serious events in her life. The show is a graphic dramatization of the main character’s reasons why she chose to commit suicide. We know that it is difficult to monitor everything your child is watching and therefore, to help, we wanted to give you notice about this particular series. Students are reporting that they have been watching this series. This series contains very sensitive material that could be difficult for this age group. It contains some very graphic and violent content and is rated TV-MA. We recommend that you first screen the episodes and decide as a family if you feel that your child should watch this show. If you allow your child to watch the series, it is recommended to do so together, so you can discuss real time any questions, feelings, or concerns that arise. If you choose not to give access, please explain your reasoning and allow for discussion.  Please be aware that there is no age limit to watch these series. However, you are able to add a parental control to block certain shows of a particular rating. You are unable to block specific series. You can use the following link to find more information about Netflix Parental Controls: https://www.techjunkie.com/block-shows-netflix/.  In addition, if your child has already viewed the show or after you view the show with your child the following talking points from the JED Foundation may be helpful: https://www.jedfoundation.org/13-reasons-why-talking-points/
