2017-2018 School Year Start Times

With opening of West Clermont High School and West Clermont Middle School we knew there would be an increased demand on traffic in the area of the two schools and on bus transportation.  To help with the increased traffic in the area, Clough Pike will be widened between McMann Road, and Bach-Buxton Road.  The construction is currently underway and is scheduled to be completed by June 30th.  Additionally, West Clermont Middle School will begin the day at 7:00am and West Clermont High School will begin the day at 7:45am to allow the middle school traffic to filter out before the high school traffic arrives.

To overcome transportation issues such as geography, the length of the routes, and the ability of a bus to complete the middle school route and then get to their elementary route the district has to absorb 8 buses to make sure they can make the run to West Clermont Middle School and then turn around and make their elementary routes.  To accommodate this, Brantner Elementary will be moved to being a late starting school beginning with the 2017-2018 school year.  The school day at Brantner will now run from 9:20am – 3:55pm.

Brantner will join Holly Hill, Merwin,  Summerside, Willowville, and Withamsville Tobasco as late starting schools.  Both Amelia Elementary and Clough Pike Elementary will still begin the day at 8:20am.

Holly Hill Meet Author Chris Grabenstein

Throughout this year, a number of students in both fourth and fifth grade read the book "Escape From Mr. Lemoncello's Library" by Chris Grabenstein.  A group of fifth graders also participated in a library scavenger hunt that celebrated both the book and the Dewey decimal system.  This past week, in order to showcase his newest novel, Chris Grabenstein came to JosephBeth Bookstore, and some of our Holly Hill students were fortunate enough to meet him in person!  He was extremely charismatic and entertained the students with both stories and a sample reading from his newest book, "The Island of Dr. Libris."

A Message from the Superintendent

TO: Holly Hill Parents

FROM: Dr. Keith Kline – Superintendent

RE: Mrs. Parks

DATE: September 24, 2014

I am sending this letter home with students to let you know that Mrs. Parks has decided to retire effective immediately.  We certainly wish Mrs. Parks the best as she wraps up her career in West Clermont.

I am pleased to announce that, at last night’s Board of Education meeting, Mrs. Jackie Hospelhorn was approved as the Interim Principal at Holly Hill.  Mrs. Hospelhorn began her new assignment today and will be with us through the end of this school year.  She most recently worked as the principal of Merwin Elementary and comes with years of high quality experience as a teacher, counselor and administrator.

I have no doubt Mrs. Hospelhorn will be able to move the building forward and I ask for your support as we welcome her to Holly Hill.

As always, thank you for your support of your child(ren), Holly Hill and the West Clermont Local School District.

Students Remember

Today is the 13th anniversary of the tragic 9/11 event that killed many people in an attack on the Twin Towers, the Pentagon, and Pennsylvania. To help the students remember, the fifth graders made paper ribbons to help remember those who lost their lives. Other grades discussed the event with pictures and timelines. Brainpop, an animated website, was used to also help explain this event to the younger students.

Please take a moment tonight and talk to your children about this horrific event.

We shall always remember.

Grandparent's Lunch

"Grandparents (and Parents) Join US for Lunch On May 21 and 22 the grandparents, parents, friends and other family members joined their grandchildren for lunch at Holly Hill. The lunch room was decorated by the Holly Hill PTO with centerpieces and table clothes. Mary Havrilla, a grandparent and volunteer, provided her delicious tea cookies for this occasion. Some kids were provided a lunch from grandma and grandpa while others went through the lunch line with their grandchild. It was a great turn out. Brittany Byrd, daughter to Mrs. Byrd, came home from college and put together a video which highlighted students telling the camera why they love their grandparents. Brittany put together a  beautiful video that was offered to grandparents and families to purchase. All the proceeds go to Brittany for her college expenses.  After lunch, grandparents were able go to the Book Fair and shop with their grandchildren. Children were able to purchase some great reading for the summer. Thanks to all who supported this event and volunteered to help. It was a great success."

Third Grade Zoo Field Trip

"Third graders had a great time at the Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Gardens on Thursday, May 29th.  Students explored numerous habitats, which was really special because they made many connections with their own personal research that they are currently doing for their exhibit project. Students were excited to see animals that they were researching from their assigned region. Students were able to understand Science Domain Specific Vocabulary words such as, adaptations, physical features, animal behaviors, climate, life cycle, and much more.

Third grade teachers would like to give a big shout out to our parent volunteers who were able to make this trip happen! Thanks for all of your support."

Career Day

For Right to Read Week, our theme was "Careers."  We had many volunteers who came in for career day. Holly Hill would like to thank Annette Weber, who is an X-Ray Technician and Benjamin Weber who is a Nurse for Mercy Hospitals, who came in and gave an interactive presentation for our 3-5 graders. Students learned about these two important careers in the medical field, what they can be doing now to prepare (math, reading, teamwork), and even had a walk through of what these two professionals do on a daily basis. Thank you so much for enriching our students with real world experience and broadening their knowledge on what's available for them!

Fire Alarm

Parents of Holly Hill Elementary School Students:

This morning at  11:00 a. m. fire alarm was activated by a hot cart that was under a heat sensor.  Students were evacuated from the building until the fire department determined that the building was clear and safe. Students re-entered the building at 11:20 a. m. I addressed the students and staff regarding the situation, reassured them that the building was safe, and praised them for their behavior during the drill. We have taken steps to assure that this will not happen again.

I certainly want to communicate with our Holly Hill school community regarding the event. If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to contact me at parks_n@westcler.org.

5th Grade Game Night

Holly Hill 5th graders and their parents had a night of games, snacks, prizes and a LOT of laughter!  Teachers hosted the game night after hearing many students only saw their friends at school.  "We wanted the students to have the opportunity to play and socialize with their classmates as well as give parents the chance to meet their friends and interact with their child."  The students had a great time playing Minute To Win It games, Scooter Races and get a silly picture at the photo booth, just to name a few!  They also had the chance to paint a piece of a 5th grade mural for graduation and grab a snack.  All students left with a prize-donated by local community businesses and Mrs. Parks, and a smile on their face.

Calamity Day Update

You may have heard that the state House and Senate both passed a revision to the Calamity Day Plans for all schools in Ohio.  While this legislation needs the Governor’s signature, he has said he will sign the bill.  School districts across Ohio are now using a 5+4+4 model for calamity days.  Here’s how it works. As has been Ohio’s history, the first five calamity days do not need to be made up.  By law, attendance on those days are waived. The next four days must be accounted for using contingency plans.  For West Clermont, our 3 blizzard bag days count and we will have school on Thursday, June 5th to get us to four. Once we have met these initial requirements, the state has given us an additional four waiver days if we need them.  Hopefully, we won’t.  Bottom line – because of Blizzard Bags and making up one day on June 5th, West Clermont is even on days missed.  Please make sure you adjust your calendar for that day as it will be our new “last day of school” for this year.

West Clermont School District

Quick Q & A regarding snow day

Q. Will any more Blizzard Bags be assigned?
A. No, the state allowed schools to assign up to three Blizzard Bags. WCSD has assigned all three BBs, with the last one due to teachers, tomorrow, Tuesday, March 4.

Q. Will the state allow more calamity days?
A. Unsure. The Senate and House haven't yet reached an agreement on Gov. Kasich's call to increase in the number of calamity days beyond the five days schools are allotted. The bill has been sent to a joint conference committee, which may take a couple more weeks, which leaves us unsure.

Q. Will we have to make up days at the end of the school year?
A. As things stand right now, Yes. The state allows five calamity days annually, plus three Blizzard Bags days = eight days. Today is our ninth day closed due to snow. We have to make up one day at the end of the year.
PENDING LEGISLATION: The House of representatives passed a bill one week prior to the Senate passing a different bill. Sounds like the House and Senate need to get it together. You might want to contact your favorite legislator.

We are changing to improve the lives of our students

The West Clermont School District is working hard to bring high quality educational experiences to all students.

Dental Screening

Students Get Teeth Screening

On Thursday students in the third grade volunteered to have their teeth checked through the Ohio Department of Health (ODH). The ODE is collaborating with more than 400 public schools in all 88 counties in Ohio to conduct this screening. The findings of the screening will help ODH monitor trends in the amount of dental disease among Ohio's children and draw federal funding for dental health programs for schools. The results will be noted on a letter for each child to take home. Each child who participated received a toothbrush, sticker and pencil. All information is private. The third grade students who participated said it was fun and painless. They liked the prizes they got.

Schools evacuated today

Early this afternoon, Kentucky law enforcement received a 911 call indicating that there were bombs in all New Richmond Schools and Amelia Schools. Amelia Elementary, Amelia Middle School, Amelia High School, Holly Hill and Merwin Elementary were evacuated. Fire and law enforcement officials checked each building. Keeping the safety and security of our staff and students as our top priority, we kept them out of the buildings until we received a green light from law enforcement and police. Teachers stayed with their students until we received clearance to reenter our building. The District’s security system and crisis process worked well. Currently, students are back in school, and everyone is safe

We will not know if that is going to happen until mid-to-late February.

Donors Choose Project to Support Holly Hill

Looking for an easy way to support Holly Hill?

This week, I created a Donors Choose project to try to get a classroom set of 25 books of the novel Wonder by R. J. Palacio for my classroom.  This year I was able to get some books from my public library, but they are requesting that I bring them back since there are numerous people waiting to get their hands on this fabulous book.  If we had our own classroom set, we could take the time needed to really dive into this book and enjoy it at our own pace.

Project site and info:  http://www.donorschoose.org/project/wonderful-book-that-my-students-would/1519645/?rf=link-siteshare-2015-03-teacher_account-teacher_2356120&challengeid=402741

Or go to DonorsChoose.org and look up my name school information to find the project.

If you’d be willing and able to make ANY donation (it is tax deductible) for this project by March 17, 2015, your donation will be doubled thanks to DonorsChoose.org!   Just enter the code SPARK on the payment page and you’ll be matched DOLLAR FOR DOLLAR (up to $100)!

If you know anyone that may want to help my classroom, please pass this along!  The future students in this school will want to meet all the wonderful characters we’ve met in our book…just ask your children!

If you have any questions, please email me at:  gasser_j@westcler.org

Thank you in advance for any and all help!

Fifth Grade Invents A Cereal
The fifth grade students were asked the question,  "If you could invent a cereal based on the fictional book you read, what would it be?"  The students needed to invent this cereal, had to create a "commercial" to sell their "cereal" to their peers, and in addition had to work on their summarizing skills as well as identifying the theme of the fictional story.

It is amazing to see the creativity and effort put forth by these students.  It is great to see!

My Feelings are a Work of Art

On Thursday, September 19, 32 West Clermont elementary students attended the opening reception for “My Feelings are a Work of Art” display at Eastgate Mall. This art gallery is sponsored by Clermont FAST TRAC and Eastgate Mall and will be open Sept. 19-26.  In May 2013, FAST TRAC provided art supplies and support to raise awareness about the importance of mental health and to nurture the social and emotional well-being of children during special days of “art action” called “My Feelings are a Work of Art.”

Students from Holly Hill and Amelia Elementaries who participated in this initiative were able to go to the mall to view their art as well as many others’.   We were joined by ten parents and two grandparents at the gallery, giving the students more recognition for the importance of expressing their feelings. The generosity of Eastgate Mall made it extra special for the students. They held a door prize drawing and 10 of our students won $10 gift cards!

This memorable outing was made possible by the support of our principals, Nancy Parks and Jeffrey Riel, and FAST TRAC, a system of care initiative of the Clermont County Mental Health & Recovery Board..

Many thanks to Rochelle Jones for organizing this field trip.

Students Geared up for First Day

" Students Geared up for First Day"

" Holly Hill students Clarence Green, Zak Franz, Harlie Kissee and other fifth grade students have their first lunch for the 2013 -14 school year. Mr. Rick, the new head custodian, is already hard at work to clean the lunch room for the next group of students to come in. Students were very excited to get started. Temperatures for the first week were very nice and helped get the students through the day. We welcome all the new students and welcome back our families and students from last year.

Families don't forget to practice the ID numbers so that students can go through the breakfast and lunch lines as quickly as possible."

Spelling Bee

November 25, 2013 the Holly Hill 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students participated in the Scripps National School Spelling Bee.  After many challenging rounds and words, Chaney Malan, a 5th grader became the school champion for the second year in a row.  She will now take an online test in January, and if she completes this successfully, she can move on to the regionals which will take place in downtown Cincinnati.  There was a tie for second place:  Victoria Feugate (4th grade) and Kanen Messer (3rd grade).  The 3rd place winner was Monica Schroer (4th grade).  Congratulations to all the winners!

New payment system to be installed in cafeterias

The Food Service Department is installing a new food payment program in the cafeterias during the Christmas break.
Starting on January 6, 2014, all payments for meal accounts will have to be made through EZ Pay. There will be a button on all school websites that will direct you to the EZ Pay page.
The last day for parents to make payments to the meal accounts on myschoolaccount.com will be December 6, 2013.  During the transition time, students will have to buy food with cash.

Families are not required to use EZ pay. Students may continue using cash to purchase food without a fee.
We are trying to keep any inconvenience to a minimum. Thanks, in advance, for your patience.

Story Hour at Eastgate Mall

Holly Hill hosted the West Clermont July Story Hour at Eastgate Mall on Saturday July 20, 2013 at 11:00.

"Girl Asks for Shoes Instead of Birthday Gifts"

Layla Vinson, a primary student at Bethel Schools, decided to do things a little different this year for her birthday. When asked what she wanted, it was a surprise when she answered with "shoes". So the family asked; "What kind of shoes would you like for your birthday?" Layla then explained that she wanted lots of shoes! Instead of presents for her birthday, Layla wished to donate all the shoes she received in place of presents to those children less fortunate. Layla said, "I  just really want to help kids. I saw a girl do this on the news and it made me want to do something myself." We would like to recognize Layla for this thoughtful act and let her know that she is making a difference at such a young age. The kids who will benefit from this donation can give Layla a great big thanks for making their lives a little better from her selfless act of kindness.

Thanks Layla for allowing me to accept this donation and meet you in person.

Mrs. Nancy Parks, Principal

WALK A THON

On November 8, 2013 the PTO had its very first Walk A Thon.  The money that was raised will be used to help fund the primary playground equipment for Preschool, Kindergarten and First Grade.  Those students have been without playground equipment for over two years.  PTO members Jessica Franz, Michelle Hall, Angela Holmberg, Jennifer Block and Megan Greene worked very hard to be able to organize this fundraiser.  Michelle Hall was the major organizer and we say thanks to her and to all the PTO members and parents who volunteered for an extremely successful day.  After expenses we raised $4,700.00.  All the kids had a great time.  We would also like to thank our sponsors who donated supplies and money to help this event be so successful.  We will continue to raise money throughout the year in order to obtain our goal which is $10,000.00.  If you would like to donate please contact Holly Hill PTO at 943-8947.

Duke Energy National Theatre for Children
“Showdown at Resource Ranch”

The National Theatre for Children came to Holly Hill on Thursday, Oct. 3. The  message was from the Duke Energy Company about how to conserve energy. The students were entertained with Showdown at the Resource Ranch. Students were shown how to conserve energy and be resource wise. Carrie (one of the actors) needs to defeat Billy the Kit (another actor) to help save energy at the ranch. Students like Michael Day, were asked to help participate to make sure Billy understand the importance of saving energy.

All students received a booklet that reinforced this message. Each student also received a Resource Ranger card. On this card, you will find directions for requesting your own free resource reward by going to ResourceRewards.org or by calling 1-855-386-9548 to start saving energy today.

Holly Hill Elementary Marquee Holly Hill Marquee

The Marquee looks very pretty thanks to the flower donation from Sam's Club in Eastgate. The flowers were donated over the summer and planted out by the marquee by Principal Nancy Parks and school secretary Bonnie Gloeckner. A BIG THANK YOU goes out to Sam's Club for their support of our school.

We have heard many questions from parents about the 2013/14 start/dismiss times.

Here are the top 10 questions and answers.

Fire Department Visits Preschool
The Central Joint Fire Department visited the Holly Hill Preschool on 10/9 and 10/10.  These brave firefighters taught us what is hot and what is not hot, dressed in their gear (which weighs more than our children:)) and let us explore the fire truck.  They also reviewed our fire safety rules:  calling 911 in an emergency, "Stop, Drop, and Roll" if your clothes are on fire, crawling low under smoke and never touching matches or lighters.  The children were then given hats and coloring books to take home and share what they learned! We thank them for their time and service!!
West Clermont makes a difference...Thank You!
West Clermont families make a difference in the lives of the needy. The "Stuff the Bus" food drive was a huge success. The food drive started on Monday, Oct. 14 and ended on Friday, Oct. 18. In total, over 10,000 non-perishable food items were stuffed in the bus for Inter Parish Ministries. Recently, bus drivers delivered the food to the Inter Parish Ministries. Students, maintenance employees, bus drivers, teachers, administrators and superintendent unloaded the over 10,000 items that West Clermont School students collected for the Inter Parish Ministries. Pictures are here!
