They need to calculate the weight of equipment and the weight of the product. This is all part of the Cincinnati Engineering Enhanced Math and Science program, or CEEMS. It was funded by a grant from the National Science Foundation. Watch video here.

$1.5 million in reductions coming in 2013-14

Written by Roxanna Swift, Community Journal

UNION TWP. — West Clermont schools will cut about $1.5 million in the 2013-2014 school year in an effort to balance the budget.

Superintendent Keith Kline shared with school board members his reduction plan at the school board meeting April 22.

Within the district office, reductions include salary adjustments, one less secretarial position and replacing assistant superintendent positions with director-level positions, Kline said. Human resources job duties will continue to be outsourced through the Clermont County Educational Service Center.

“That (outsourcing) will save us, moving forward, about $35,000 a year,” Kline said.

Levy Options Survey - expires July 25

The Board of Education is considering a property tax levy for the purpose of operations in November, 2013. Last month, a menu of options was presented to the community. In an effort to "build" a levy that the community will support the Board asked the community to review the menu of options and submit their opinions. After reviewing community feedback the Board has narrowed the levy options to three. The good news is that because the state is increasing funding for West Clermont, the Board was able to reduce the base millage amount to 2.9 mills.

The Board is interested in your opinion. Click here to take the survey.

If you have trouble accessing the survey, email Debbie Alberico. A survey will be emailed to you. Board is interested in your opinion.

The third and final Levy Options Community Input Session is scheduled for Tuesday, July 2, 6:30 pm at the Union Township Civic Center. The meeting begins with a very brief presentation of the options. Participants will then break out into small discussion groups. Each group will report the results of the discussions.

Calamity Day Update

You may have heard that the state House and Senate both passed a revision to the Calamity Day Plans for all schools in Ohio.  While this legislation needs the Governor’s signature, he has said he will sign the bill. School districts across Ohio are now using a 5+4+4 model for calamity days.  Here’s how it works.

Quick Q & A regarding snow day

Q. Will any more Blizzard Bags be assigned?
A. No, the state allowed schools to assign up to three Blizzard Bags. WCSD has assigned all three BBs, with the last one due to teachers, tomorrow, Tuesday, March 4.

Q. Will the state allow more calamity days?
A. Unsure. The Senate and House haven't yet reached an agreement on Gov. Kasich's call to increase in the number of calamity days beyond the five days schools are allotted. The bill has been sent to a joint conference committee, which may take a couple more weeks, which leaves us unsure.

Q. Will we have to make up days at the end of the school year?
A. As things stand right now, Yes. The state allows five calamity days annually, plus three Blizzard Bags days = eight days. Today is our ninth day closed due to snow. We have to make up one day at the end of the year.
PENDING LEGISLATION: The House of representatives passed a bill one week prior to the Senate passing a different bill. Sounds like the House and Senate need to get it together. You might want to contact your favorite legislator.

"We finish our PE class with yoga because it slows the heart rate, calms the students, and enables them to return to the classroom focused and ready to learn more," she added.

Safe Schools; ALiCE Training

“Schools are some of the safest places for our children because most schools practice evacuation drills for fires and protective measures for tornadoes,” said West Clermont School District Superintendent Keith Kline. “However, just like practicing monthly fire drills, it’s important that staff knows how to respond in the very unlikely event of an armed intruder,” he added.

GEHS students will participate in county-wide mock emergency drill

Twenty Glen Este High School students have been invited to participate in a Mock Emergency under the direction of The University of Cincinnati Medical Center and the American Red Cross.  As a part of the Glen Este High School Health Education Curriculum, Instructor Joan Stear has for years used “Moulage” (Special Effects Makeup) as a teaching technique for instruction of types of wounds during her first aid curriculum.  According to Ms. Stear, “Creating the fake wounds on their own arm helps the students demonstrate learning in a concrete way!  Using their skills to help create fake injuries in a mock disaster training drill drives that knowledge home.  I know of no more rewarding situation than to use your knowledge to help save others!"

District Calendar Input

The West Clermont School District has begun the development of district calendars for 2018-19 and 2019-2020 and is seeking input from parents and staff before a final recommendation is made to the Board of Education in late November.

2017-2018 School Year Start Times

With opening of West Clermont High School and West Clermont Middle School we knew there would be an increased demand on traffic in the area of the two schools and on bus transportation.  To help with the increased traffic in the area, Clough Pike will be widened between McMann Road, and Bach-Buxton Road.  The construction is currently underway and is scheduled to be completed by June 30th.  Additionally, West Clermont Middle School will begin the day at 7:00am and West Clermont High School will begin the day at 7:45am to allow the middle school traffic to filter out before the high school traffic arrives.

To overcome transportation issues such as geography, the length of the routes, and the ability of a bus to complete the middle school route and then get to their elementary route the district has to absorb 8 buses to make sure they can make the run to West Clermont Middle School and then turn around and make their elementary routes.  To accommodate this, Brantner Elementary will be moved to being a late starting school beginning with the 2017-2018 school year.  The school day at Brantner will now run from 9:20am – 3:55pm.

Brantner will join Holly Hill, Merwin,  Summerside, Willowville, and Withamsville Tobasco as late starting schools.  Both Amelia Elementary and Clough Pike Elementary will still begin the day at 8:20am.

Leader of The Pack Award

The Board of Education has decided to establish a new award with the new high school and middle school opening up later this year.  The award is called the Leader of the Pack Award.  The purpose of the award is to recognize any district employee that goes above and beyond the call of duty in service to our students and to our community.

We could not think of a better recipient for the first Leader of the Pack Award than Tyler Hopper, the Athletic Trainer at Glen Este High School.  Three weeks ago, one of the girls basketball players at Glen Este suffered a major medical episode towards the end of practice.  Tyler was called to the gym and immediately began performing CPR.  His actions truly saved this young lady’s life.  We are happy to report that because of his actions, the young lady is doing much better and working everyday towards making a full recovery.

For his quick action and dedicated service to the student athletes at Glen Este High School we are proud to name Tyler Hopper as the first ever recipient of the West Clermont Local Schools Leader of the Pack Award.

Letter to parents regarding "Blizzard Bags"

Dear West Clermont Parents:

By current law, schools in Ohio are permitted to use up to five calamity days for emergency circumstances including hazardous weather conditions. As of today, West Clermont has used six calamity days and, unfortunately, winter continues to have a grip on our area. Currently, the State Legislature is considering giving Ohio’s schools additional calamity days due to the severity of this year’s winter. We will not know if that is going to happen until mid-to-late February.

WCSD "By Request" performed at tribute
A thank you note from Gina M. DiMario Union Township Media/Communications Manager andmember of the committee to bring the Vietnam Vets Traveling Wall to Union Township to West Clermont Schools...

To all of you, a huge thanks for bringing “By Request” out to Veterans’ Memorial Park for the Opening Ceremony of the American Veterans’ Traveling Tribute. The choir’s voices were beautiful and I personally think the a cappela style, with no accompaniment, somehow is in keeping with the solemnity of the Wall.

Thank all the students for us. We couldn’t have been happier.

New payment system to be installed in cafeterias

The Food Service Department is installing a new food payment program in the cafeterias during the Christmas break.
Starting on January 6, 2014, all payments for meal accounts will have to be made through EZ Pay. There will be a button on all school websites that will direct you to the EZ Pay page.
The last day for parents to make payments to the meal accounts on myschoolaccount.com will be December 6, 2013.  During the transition time, students will have to buy food with cash.

Families are not required to use EZ pay. Students may continue using cash to purchase food without a fee.

Students honor and appreciate veterans

During the months of April and May students from Amelia Middle School, Amelia High School, Glen Este Middle School, and Merwin Elementary wrote letters to veterans who will participate in the Honor Flight Program.  Honor Flight is a program that was established to allow veterans of WWII and the Korean War to visit their war memorials in Washington, D.C.  The veterans are given letters during a “mail call” during their returning flight from the memorials.

Sandy Phelps, seventh grade Social Studies teacher at Amelia Middle, coordinated the mail writing effort. A friend of Sandy’s, who volunteers for Honor Flight, set a goal of collecting 5000 letters for the veterans by June 1, 2013.  The letter writing efforts of the West Clermont students, their teachers, and friends produced 785 letters to add to the cause.  At last count, the goal of 5000 letters has been achieved!  Thank you to the teachers who took time to explain this worthy cause to their students and allowed them to write the letters.

For more information about Honor Flight in our area, visit www.honorflighttristate.org

The doors of West Clermont elementary schools will remain open a little longer each day. In addition, the buildings will begin offering limited evening hours. In the wake of budget constraints, each of the district’s eight elementary schools now close daily at 4 p.m.

West Clermont Local School District Saves $2.9 Million

Columbus – West Clermont Local School District (WCLSD) has saved more than $2 million during the 2013-14 school year by implementing recommendations from a performance audit released today by Auditor of State Dave Yost.

“West Clermont is my new poster child for performance audits,” Auditor Yost said. “The school officials’ proactive approach has already saved taxpayers millions, and put the district back on track towards fiscal stability.”

Congratulations to Amelia Elementary school and W-T Elementary school for receiving the "Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design" certification from the U.S. Green Building Council.

Smarter spending is key to efficiency

The West Clermont Local School District is doing business differently. Superintendent Keith Kline said that the district has four areas of operations in which to concentrate. “In order to move forward, we must focus on four key areas: Safe, secure and inviting schools; 21st century teaching and learning; Communication; and Financial stability."

Despite $7.4 million in reductions including 92 teaching positions, 32 support staff positions, and seven administrative positions, the district’s five year forecast reflects a $5.2 million deficit in the year 2014.

“It’s important to me as the leader of the district to make sure that we’re using our resources as effectively as possible,” Kline said. “For that reason, we will tighten – up operations to improve efficiency.“ Kline’s plan includes $1.5 million in reductions for the upcoming school year.
