Weekly Update from Mr. Winterberger

Hello Summerside Families!

A heartfelt Happy Holidays to everyone.  As we celebrate the Holiday Season my wish is that everyone is able to spend quality time with family and friends.  I would like to extend a sincere thank you to the Students, Staff, Volunteers, and Families who participated in our 4th and 5th grade Holiday concert this past Saturday.  We had a packed house in our gymnasium and it was wonderful to see our families gather to celebrate the Holiday Season together.

We are here for Teaching and Learning.  I can say without reservation we had a very productive and focused week of learning in all classrooms.  One of the classrooms I observed was Mrs. Schreiber's first grade Language Arts class.  Her students were engaged in partner reading, where they read from their story of the week, "Who Works Here?" Students asked each other three pre-discussed comprehension questions about the story.  The “Schreiber Sharks” (Mrs. Schreiber’s Students) then participated in a hands-on word sort to review their spelling words for the week: long i and short i. The students colored, cut and pasted them into the correct categories and read them to their partners!   Students then traveled to centers around the room to practice their punctuation, rhyming words, nouns and blend sounds.   As you can see this class was filled with engaging academic learning.  Super job Mrs. Schreiber and her first grade Schreiber Sharks!!

Veterans Day - Thank You from Summerside Elementary

Weekly Update from Mr. Winterberger

Hello Summerside Families!

We charged into the month of November as a Summerside Learning Community and had a great week of school. I was in multiple classrooms this week and want to highlight one of the great lessons I observed. I stopped in Becky Finke's 5th Grade classroom and a language arts lesson about identifying the point of view in written text was taking place. The students were deciding between first person and third person. If they decided third person they had to then decide was it third person objective, third person omniscient, or third person limited. The students had to provide proof from the text to support their answer. What impressed me most was the teamwork in that classroom and the student engagement. Great job Ms. Finke, Ms. Bose, and Ms. Hain!

I want to thank everyone who participated in our Summerside Bookfair this week. We had a nice turnout of families and the selection of books from Joseph Beth Bookstores was of high quality. We will continue to build relationships with our local businesses and vendors to improve the opportunities for our school community.  A special thank you to Joseph Beth Bookstores!

Hello Summerside Elementary Families!

We are in full swing at Summerside as we head into the month of November.  This edition of the eCommunication will highlight the many positive accomplishments we made this week as a Team and will include opportunities for you to gather and get involved at our School.  You are family here!

Teaching and Learning will always be our core focus at Summerside and our classrooms were hitting on all cylinders this week.  I was in multiple classrooms this week and the common theme was focused Teaching and Learning.  I couldn't be more proud of our Students and Staff!  I dropped in to observe the learning taking place in Ms. Armstrong's third grade classroom and they were working hard in their Language Arts groups.  While some students were independently working on their reading goal, others students were working on their typing skills at the word work station.   Students in the teacher led group were working together on making inferences and being able to show evidence for their conclusions.  What a terrific class!!

Hello Summerside Families and Happy Friday!

We just completed another super week at Summerside in our classrooms!  I encourage you to stop by tomorrow, Saturday October 24th, for our Arts and Craft Show at Summerside from 9:00am-3:00pm.  We will have over 32 craft vendors who will be selling their handmade crafts.  A special thank you to Jennifer Teets, who is one of our parents and a member of our PTO, for organizing this family event!

Teaching and Learning is our Core Business at Summerside and I will always showcase the learning taking place in our classrooms every week so our families get a glimpse into life here at Summerside.  Our Kindergarten students are always a joy to see and I am very proud of them.  Mrs. Huntington's students were engaged in a learning activity in Mathematics.  Two of our students were counting dominoes as they "park" them in the corresponding parking space on their mat.  Several number and numeration skills are practiced with this fun activity.  Keep up the good work Mrs. Huntington and her Kindergarten Students.  Keep up the good work!

Public Education Must be a Priority

ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!  Public schools have been under fire for a long time now. To provide support for a solution, staff, parents, students and community members demonstrated a united front at a meeting last week, to discuss making public education a priority.

Weekly Update from Mr. Winterberger

Hello Summerside Families!

We are closing in on the weekend and what a beautiful day it is outside today.  Thanksgiving is right around the corner and we have much to be thankful for.  Just taking a few minutes to inventory the many good things in our lives keeps things in perspective:  Our families, our close friends and neighbors, where we live, the community we are a part of, our schools, our health, and much more.

I couldn't be more thankful for the effort I am observing in our classrooms daily. Hats off to our Staff and Students.  Recently in art class the third graders learned about the famous artist Henri Matisse.  Students created shape collages based on his paper cut-outs.  Students learned how to layer geometric and organic shapes to create an eye-catching collage.  This project is on display right outside the media center.   Creative and engaging lessons are taking place in our classrooms daily.    Nice work Mrs. Williams and her Summerside Art students!!

Weekly Update from Mr. Winterberger

Hello Summerside Families!

Happy Friday!! I wish everyone a terrific weekend with family and friends.  This Fall weather is here and it’s always nice to see the Fall colors in the area this time of year.  In this busy world we live in, sometimes it's good to just stop and look at the beauty around us and enjoy the precious time we have with family.

As always I am in many classrooms every week and like to showcase teaching and learning at Summerside.  Mrs. Cann’s second graders were playing a game in class where students were taking turns practicing reading “R-controlled” vowel words which is a second grade reading foundations standard.  They were introduced to the weekly targeted skill through spelling words. They were reading spelling words as well as applying the skill to new words.  I want to take this moment to thank Mrs. Cann for the terrific job she does daily teaching our second grade students!  Also, I couldn't be more proud of our students work!

Weekly Update from Mr. Winterberger

Hello Summerside Families!!

We are charging forward as an academic community into the month of October.  Each day brings everyone an opportunity in our classrooms to engage in meaningful learning linked to the curriculum.  We started our second round of Art, Music, Physical Education, and Technology Classes this week.  I stopped in with Mr. Endres’ Music class this week to observe the teaching and learning taking place.

During the next eight days all students will be finishing their first unit of the school year in music. The first unit focused on rhythm reading skills as well as understanding meter signatures. Grades 1 through 3 focused on rhythm reading with half notes, quarter notes, eighth notes and quarter rests; while 4th and 5th grade focused on understanding meter and how it relates to writing complete measures of music on the staff.

During the 1st-3rd grade’s final class on this unit they took part in a classroom rhythm composition. These compositions were recorded on the computer program Muse Score. After the students wrote a short composition, it was performed in small groups using drums, cowbell, cabasa, and other various classroom instruments. The compositions were uploaded on a public domain library. Here are the links to check out each classes projects so far:

COMING SOON: Annual Stuff the Bus CAMPAIGN

The third annual WCSD Stuff the Bus Campaign starts on October 12.

Weekly Update from Mr. Winterberger

Hello Summerside Families!

First and foremost, I want to thank you for your teamwork as we have moved through the months of August and September.  Our Staff and Students are rolling up their sleeves and working in concert daily to improve our academic performance.  There is work to be done and always room for improvement and collectively I will keep you informed as we aim high every day.

The classroom is the "Hub" of Summerside Elementary during the day and all of our energy is focused on delivering engaging lessons.  I observed Mr. Wilson's 3rd Grade Mathematics class this week.  The Students were spinning the "fact power" wheel and doing a hands-on fact practice session.  As math concepts increase in difficulty, having a solid knowledge of basic math facts is critical in learning some of the more complex math concepts that are being introduced in the 3rd grade.  Mastering addition facts, for example, will give kids a head start on the future operation of multiplication.  Similarly, subtraction fact masters will have a much easier time learning about division later in the year.  By having basic math facts committed to memory, more complex computations become much easier.   Hat's off to Mr. Wilson for planning and executing this engaging hands on lesson for his students!!

Hello Summerside Family!

We have just completed a banner week at Summerside Elementary which kicked off with our Right to Read Week.  One special gift all educators receive is being a part of teaching a child how to read and honing those reading skills which will have a huge impact on each Child' academic future.  Reading is the platform for all future academic success and it is our top priority at Summerside.  Likewise, I view everyone at Summerside as a Reading Teacher.  That includes all of our Staff, Parents, Grandparents and others who are part a child's life.   Everyone can make an impact and we are at our best when we work as a Team.   Right to Read Week will be featured in this edition of the eCommunication.  A special thank you to our Title 1 Reading Teachers (Kendra Alexander and Ellen Beavers) who designed our Right to Week activities for our students this week!

West Clermont High School Ground Breaking

Weekly Update from Mr. Winterberger

Hello Summerside Families,

We are closing in on the last Student School Day for the 2014-2015 School Year (which is Thursday May 28th).  It's hard to believe how fast this year flew by.  I want to thank everyone for the support and teamwork in making this a excellent year for our children at Summerside Elementary.

Our Classrooms are humming right along during the month of May.  The classrooms are the "Hub" of our school and I will continue to provide you snapshots of the important work taking place there.  Mr. Wilson's 3rd Grade Students are studying Geology and they did an experiment in which they had to sift sandy soil and rocks. Students then sorted the rocks by their properties and observed what the sand and silt did in water. This mimics how sedimentary rocks are formed by layers of sediment being changed into rock by water pressure.  Nice work Mr. Wilson and our 3rd Grade Geologist!

Dear West Clermont Parents:

By current law, schools in Ohio are permitted to use up to five calamity days for emergency circumstances including hazardous weather conditions. As of today, West Clermont has used six calamity days and, unfortunately, winter continues to have a grip on our area. Currently, the State Legislature is considering giving Ohio’s schools additional calamity days due to the severity of this year’s winter. We will not know if that is going to happen until mid-to-late February.

Levy Options Survey - expires July 25

The Board of Education is considering a property tax levy for the purpose of operations in November, 2013. Last month, a menu of options was presented to the community. In an effort to "build" a levy that the community will support the Board asked the community to review the menu of options and submit their opinions. After reviewing community feedback the Board has narrowed the levy options to three. The good news is that because the state is increasing funding for West Clermont, the Board was able to reduce the base millage amount to 2.9 mills.

The Board is interested in your opinion. Click here to take the survey.

If you have trouble accessing the survey, email Debbie Alberico. A survey will be emailed to you. Board is interested in your opinion.

*Levy Options UPDATE!

The Board of Education has narrowed November levy options to three (6.3 mills, 5.8 mills, 4.8 mills). To view the components of each option, click the "view all" button.

Her class is one of many teachers will be participating in within the larger Summer Institute for Teachers at UC. It's a two-year, National Science Foundation grant-funded program for 6-12 math and science teachers. "We are learning math and science content while building our own units focusing on challenge-based learning principles," said Malone. "It is a supportive way for teachers to move towards engineering-type teaching and learning in the classroom," she added.

Community Input Sessions for levy options

The third and final Levy Options Community Input Session is scheduled for Tuesday, July 2, 6:30 pm at the Union Township Civic Center. The meeting begins with a very brief presentation of the options. Top 10 questions and answers regarding the 2013-14 start/dismiss times

We have heard many questions from parents about the 2013/14 start/dismiss times.

Here are the top 10 questions and answers.
Eastgate Mall partners with district for ‘Storytime’

Eastgate Mall has recently formed a partnership with West Clermont Schools to hold a monthly story time in the play area near JCPenney’s.

The partnership came from a desire to better connect the schools to the community.
“Research says that engaging school districts builds strong vibrant communities which support thriving businesses,” says Linda Austin, principal of Summerside Elementary. “Two-way communication with staff, parents, students, and residents of West Clermont Local schools is one of our top priorities.”

Smarter spending is key to efficiency

The West Clermont Local School District is doing business differently. Superintendent Keith Kline said that the district has four areas of operations in which to concentrate. “In order to move forward, we must focus on four key areas: Safe, secure and inviting schools; 21st century teaching and learning; Communication; and Financial stability."

Despite $7.4 million in reductions including 92 teaching positions, 32 support staff positions, and seven administrative positions, the district’s five year forecast reflects a $5.2 million deficit in the year 2014.

“It’s important to me as the leader of the district to make sure that we’re using our resources as effectively as possible,” Kline said. “For that reason, we will tighten – up operations to improve efficiency.“ Kline’s plan includes $1.5 million in reductions for the upcoming school year.

School in session

All West Clermont Schools are in session on May 3. The staff Professional Development day is May 24. School is not in session for students on May 24.

Glen Este Choir Concert this weekend

Superintendent's forum

The West Clermont Local School District has a distinct focus on four main areas of operation: safe, secure and  inviting schools; twenty-first century teaching and learning; communication; and financial stability.

WC Superintendent Dr. Keith Kline, has held a series of forums to collect input from parents and community members about the district's focus. The final forum is scheduled for...

Monday, April 15, 6:30 PM - 7:45 PM, Union Township Library

Those interested in participating in these forums should R.S.V.P. to Becky at 943-5039 as soon as possible. Please join Dr. Kline as we work together to improve education in the West Clermont Local School District.

2017-2018 School Year Start Times

With opening of West Clermont High School and West Clermont Middle School we knew there would be an increased demand on traffic in the area of the two schools and on bus transportation.  To help with the increased traffic in the area, Clough Pike will be widened between McMann Road, and Bach-Buxton Road.  The construction is currently underway and is scheduled to be completed by June 30th.  Additionally, West Clermont Middle School will begin the day at 7:00am and West Clermont High School will begin the day at 7:45am to allow the middle school traffic to filter out before the high school traffic arrives.

To overcome transportation issues such as geography, the length of the routes, and the ability of a bus to complete the middle school route and then get to their elementary route the district has to absorb 8 buses to make sure they can make the run to West Clermont Middle School and then turn around and make their elementary routes.  To accommodate this, Brantner Elementary will be moved to being a late starting school beginning with the 2017-2018 school year.  The school day at Brantner will now run from 9:20am – 3:55pm.

Brantner will join Holly Hill, Merwin,  Summerside, Willowville, and Withamsville Tobasco as late starting schools.  Both Amelia Elementary and Clough Pike Elementary will still begin the day at 8:20am.

Dear Parents of Third Grade Students at Summerside,

We are off to a great start and I could be more proud of your children in our classrooms.  One item across the State of Ohio that is unique to just Third Grade is the Third Grade Reading Guarantee.  In a nutshell it is a piece of legislation that requires public schools to assess all 3rd grade students in reading in the Fall and again in the Spring.  Students must pass the 3rd grade reading test to move on to 4th grade next year in reading.

Our focus at Summerside is to make sure we prepare all of our student this year to pass the 3rd Grade Reading Guarantee.  100% of our students passed last year.  I am inviting all parents of 3rd graders to a meeting this Wednesday at 7:00PM if you would like more information about the Third Grade Reading Guarantee.  This will be open forum session where I will provide you detailed and information regarding the reading guarantee and  provide time for our families to ask any question you may have about it.

This meeting is optional and is just another opportunity for anyone who would like more information.  In them meantime I have attached information to ensure our families are well educated on this high stakes test.  If you have any questions after reading this letter don't hesistate to call me on my direct cell line at 373-5735.  Have a super day!!

As it stands now, we only have a couple of people signed up to work booths from the noon - 2 shifts. We may have to eliminate games if we have no workers. Please consider donating one hour of time to help us give our kids a carnival to remember.

You can sign up to volunteer by going tohttp://www.signupgenius.com/go/30e0e45a8ae23a3fa7-summerside OR complete the form that came home with the kids last week (Click View All to see the form) OR email summersidePTO@gmail.com to let us know how you can help. It you have High School kids in the house that needs service hours, this would be a great way to earn some hours.

We thank you for your support!

Weekly Update from Mr. Winterberger

Hello Summerside Families and Happy Friday!

A positive attitude makes all the difference when tackling our day to day responsibilities.   We often talk in society about role models.  One role model I get to observe in action every day is your children.  Children have it right, they arrive daily with a spring in their step and charge into the day.  Their positive spirit is contagious!  A sincere thank you for the privilege of serving you and your children daily.

I often speak about the classroom being the "Hub" of our school where Teaching and Learning is our focus.  Our Media Center is one location in our school where students are introduced to books and reading.  Below are photos of Mrs. Jansen's second graders engaged in reading in the Media Center this week.  Our students are learning how to navigate the Media Center and how to select books of interest.  Way to go Mrs. Jansen's super readers!!

Weekly Update from Mr. Winterberger

Hello Summerside Families!

Our Students, Staff, and Volunteers have rolled up their sleeves and this week has been a very productive week in our classrooms, with our after school events student enrichment classes, and a special thank you to everyone who attended our conferences this week.

Teaching and Learning is our core focus during the day and we were able to tie Veterans Day into a meaningful classroom experience for our students linked to the curriculum.  The Tri-State Honor Flight organization takes local WWII Veterans and Korean War Veterans to the Washington D.C. memorials built in their honor.  On the return home from their flight they have a "Mail Call".  Our students wrote the Honor Flight Veterans friendly letters encouraging them for the sacrifices they have made for our nation.  These letters will be permanent keepsakes for the Veterans.  I couldn’t think of a better way for our Summerside students to develop a shared understanding of these great Veterans and the Country we are all fortunate to live in.   Nice work Summerside Students!!

National School Breakfast Week

March 3 – March 7, is National School Breakfast Week. We take this time to emphasize the importance of a healthy, balanced school breakfast. Students need to eat breakfast to get the nutrition they need to fuel their busy school days. Research shows starting the day with a school breakfast can improve classroom behavior, better attention span, and better performance in the classroom and on standardized tests.

Schools evacuated today

Early this afternoon, Kentucky law enforcement received a 911 call indicating that there were bombs in all New Richmond Schools and Amelia Schools. Amelia Elementary, Amelia Middle School, Amelia High School, Holly Hill and Merwin Elementary were evacuated. Fire and law enforcement officials checked each building. Keeping the safety and security of our staff and students as our top priority, we kept them out of the buildings until we received a green light from law enforcement and police. Teachers stayed with their students until we received clearance to reenter our building. The District’s security system and crisis process worked well. Currently, students are back in school, and everyone is safe

Weekly Update from Mr. Winterberger

Weekly Update From Mr. Winterberger

Hello Summerside Families!

We had a terrific week in our classrooms and the recent drop in temperature has been a welcome change!  Fall is right around the corner!  I observed several classrooms this week and it is always a joy to stop in our Kindergarten classrooms.  There is nothing better in this world than being in presence of Kindergarten students and the positive energy the project every day.  We are very fortunate to have Mrs. Emery on our Staff teaching our Kindergarten students.  Her students are engaged and excited every time I am in her classroom.  In Mrs. Emery’s classes the students have been busy with listening for words that have the same ending sounds, or Rhyme. The students match picture cards with Rhyming words, then are given word and they will give a word or words that Rhyme. After that, the students are given sets of words to determine if they are Rhyming words or not.  Each skill is different; matching, saying and then listening for Rhyming words. This practice helps the students at assessment time when they need to demonstrate all three skills.

In Ms. Finke’s 5th Grade Class, students have been learning about the classification of animals and how they are grouped within the animal kingdom.  Using dichotomous keys, students identified the skulls of various animals.  They then used their knowledge of consumers to identify whether these animals were predators or prey based on the position of their eye sockets.  They also had to identify them as carnivores, omnivores or herbivores based on their teeth.  After this, students were asked where these animals would be within their ecosystem's food web.  Hats off to our 5th Grade Scientists!

Summerside's Mural

This year we are thinking BIG in art! To start the school year off, every student at Summerside is creating a small work of art that when combined with their classmates, will become a colorful mural that plays with shape , color and line.  In class, students are learning about line as a very important element of art and how to use it as a building block to design. Each student divided a circle into 4 equal parts and drew a variety of lines and designs on each, making it symmetrical.  Once their designs were drawn, the pieces were flipped and glued into the corners of a square to create a diamond shape.  When the pieces are put side-by-by to one another, they fit together to create a circle pattern.  They are reminiscent of how quilt squares fit together to create a pattern. Each grade has been assigned a color from the rainbow and when assembled together, the mural will flow effortlessly from one color to the next. The project is bigger than just in its size. My goal of the mural is to create a sense of community through art.  The squares represent our students.  Each student is an important part of our school and masterpiece.  When you look closer, you will notice the differences in design that make each square or student unique.

Weekly Update from Mr. Winterberger

Hello Summerside Families and Happy Friday!

As we head into the Labor Day weekend, we are proud of our work ethic at Summerside.  One thing I can assure you of is that our Students, Staff, and Volunteers work hard as a Team each day.  Monday September 7th is the Labor Day Holiday and we hope everyone is able to enjoy the fruits of their Labor by enjoying this day off with family and friends.  Hope you find a cool place to celebrate!

A key lifelong skill we work on daily at Summerside is modeling a strong work ethic.   Our classrooms are the "Hub" of our school and I will be showcasing several classrooms I stopped in to observe this week and will give you a taste of the Teaching and Learning taking place.  I was in Mrs. Williams Art Class this week and our students under the guidance of Mrs. Williams have created a new Mural for our school which is located in one of our hallways.
Each student contributed by making a square.  The message of this mural is when we put everyone's square together we will have something great to be proud of and colorful to brighten up the hallways.   We are a team at Summerside and the new Mural is a visual reminder that together the sky is the limit for our school community.  Hats off to Mrs. Williams and our Artist!!

March into Literacy Month

The month of March is "March into Literacy Month". The Union Township Library branch is hosting activities and workshops throughout the month. The first event is on March 7th from 6 to 8 pm.

Quick Q & A regarding snow day

Q. Will any more Blizzard Bags be assigned?
A. No, the state allowed schools to assign up to three Blizzard Bags. WCSD has assigned all three BBs, with the last one due to teachers, tomorrow, Tuesday, March 4.
Q. Will the state allow more calamity days?
A. Unsure. The Senate and House haven't yet reached an agreement on Gov. Kasich's call to increase in the number of calamity days beyond the five days schools are allotted. The bill has been sent to a joint conference committee, which may take a couple more weeks, which leaves us unsure.

Q. Will we have to make up days at the end of the school year?
A. As things stand right now, Yes. The state allows five calamity days annually, plus three Blizzard Bags days = eight days. Today is our ninth day closed due to snow. We have to make up one day at the end of the year.
PENDING LEGISLATION: The House of representatives passed a bill one week prior to the Senate passing a different bill. Sounds like the House and Senate need to get it together. You might want to contact your favorite legislator.

Homework Help Night

All Saints Lutheran Church in Mt. Carmel at Beechwood Road and Route 32 is starting a Homework Help Night for students in grades 1-8. Encouraging Each Other

Our youngest eaglets in grades Kindergarten thru 2rd grade decorated the doors of their older friends as they prepared to take their OAA reading, math and science tests.   Students wrote encouraging notes to the older children which included positive messages and encouraging words.   At Summerside, learning is a group effort.  We are a caring school community.

Elementary Schools now open longer

The doors of West Clermont elementary schools will remain open a little longer each day. In addition, the buildings will begin offering limited evening hours. In the wake of budget constraints, each of the district’s eight elementary schools now close daily at 4 p.m.

However, the West Clermont Local School District Board of Education voted unanimously March 11 to keep the buildings open for administration, faculty and staff until 5 p.m. daily. Board member Denise Smith said the additional hour for faculty to be in the building will be a benefit.  More

Hello Summerside Families!

We just completed our first full week at Summerside Elementary and it was GREAT!  I couldn't be more proud of our Students, Staff, and Parents who worked together as a Team striving to be the best that we can be.  Nice work!

Our Students closed out the week very excited about tonight’s Glen Este vs Amelia High School game.   It was really neat to see our students displaying West Clermont Spirit today.

Teaching and Learning was in full gear at Summerside this week.  Our Students have been engaged in their first week of Specials and this week I want to showcase our technology class that all students are receiving this year.  We are excited to be offering a technology class as a special this year taught by our own Mr. White.  We will be teaching keyboarding, computer coding, looking at digital citizenship, robotics, digital communications, google docs and internet research during Mr. White’s class this year.  I couldn't be excited about this new specials class being offered at Summerside and at all West Clermont Schools!

Weekly Update from Mr. Winterberger

Hello Summerside Families!

A sincere thank you to everyone for making our first three days of school a huge success.  Our classrooms are the “Hub” of our school and I am proud of the Teaching and Learning that took place this week.  I will showcase classroom work every week in this Friday eCommunication.

I dropped in Ms. Fink’s 5th Grade Language Arts class and  was very impressed with the student engagement there.  Students were working on a Making Words activity.  This activity was part of the weekly word study where we look at the formation of words, meanings of prefixes, suffixes and root words, spelling patterns and vocabulary growth.  Students are learning the meanings of prefixes and suffixes to understand meanings of unknown words and looking at spelling patterns by forming words with a given set of letters.  Using all letters to create one word, students then work on grammar lessons, syllabication, antonyms and synonyms for the given word, inferring meaning and then creating written responses based on the entire lesson.  It is a multidisciplinary lesson which engages all students in the study of the English language.

Times are Changing

We are working to transform education in West Clermont to better meet the needs and expectations of our students and their families. Next school year, elementary students will have 116 more hours of instructional time, and secondary students will have 43 more hours with teachers.

Weekly Update from Mr. Winterberger

Weekly Update From Mr. Winterberger

I hope everyone had a nice week.  Old Man Winter seems to be hanging on this weekend and we have flown through the month of January. Every day moves us closer to Spring.  That is my story and I am sticking to it!   We had a super week at Summerside and below I want to highlight a few key points.

Teaching and learning is heart of our day and I am extremely proud of the work taking place in our classrooms.  Mrs. Simmons' class is always engaged in top notch instruction when I stop in the classroom. Students were practicing their weekly word work and reading comprehension goals individually and in small groups during Bell Work time.  It is a busy time of day moving in and out of groups with Mrs. Simmons.   Super job Mrs. Simmons and her students!!

Our after school clubs are off and running. I am excited to publish the first round of articles written by students in our Journalism Club.  Take a peek inside this edition of the weekly update for the articles.  Hats off to our Summerside Journalism Team!!

Weekly Update From Mr. Winterberger

We are quickly moving through the month of January.   This short week has been filled with engaging academics in our core classrooms.  I will continue to provide you a weekly snapshot of the academic work taking place in our classrooms.  We are right on track!!

I stopped in Mrs. Duncan's fourth grade social studies class and they were hard at work engaged in meaningful learning.  For their daily geography work, students were learning the differences between physical and human characteristics on maps.  In the  lesson, students were identifying landforms and waterways on a physical map of Africa.  I was very impressed with the student focus today.  Hats off to Mrs. Duncan and her students!!

If you have visited our school lately then you have seen the new photographs mounted in our lobby and hallways with our students depicted in real word roles, such as a Newscaster, Chemist, Engineer, and Film Crew to name a few.  The work we do with children at Summerside impacts their future and we want to inspire our students to aim high.  A special thank you to Lisa Hezlep who took the photographs and displayed them in our lobby.  Most importantly for inspiring our students to dream big for their future.  I'm proud of our students and am confident big things are ahead for our students in their futures.

Summerside Jump Rope for Heart!

Dear Families of Summerside Elementary students,

This week your student(s) will be bringing home a flyer for the Jump Rope for Heart Program. This is a fantastic program put on by the American Heart Association in an effort to educate the public about heart disease and heart health.  There are two different portions to this program. Students will be participating in a Jump Rope for Heart (JRFH) Event here at Summerside scheduled for February 10th, 2016. The event will be held in the gym. Students will get the opportunity to participate in an activity involving all four of the specials areas – art, music, technology and physical education. A schedule will be sent closer to the event date.

Weekly Update From Mr. Winterberger

We are at our best when we work together as a team with Home and School.  A great example of that team effort was our conferences this week.  Families and teaching staff worked together on conference night for our children and that approach is a winning combination every time.   I had the chance to speak with many parents and I can confidently say the Summerside family is well.

Our classrooms are the engine of our school.  The classrooms are the heart of our daily business, and everything we do at Summerside supports a top notch instructional day for our students. The day is set up so our teachers can focus on teaching.  Mathematics is a content area which is crucial for our students' long term academic success.  A strong background in Mathematics opens many doors for students in their future.   This week I stopped in Miss Tabar's 4th Grade Math class.  Students were learning how to add and subtract fractions with the same denominators. The students learned that when they add and subtract these fractions, they only add or subtract the numerator and the denominator stays the same.  Students used fraction tiles for a visual in order for them to understand why the denominator does not change when performing the operations. Students were then required to draw a model in their math journals to represent the equation given.   Super job Mrs. Tabar and her students!!!

Weekly Update From Mr. Winterberger

Wow!  What a terrific week we had at Summerside.  Each week I reflect on what we accomplished as a team and I couldn't be more proud of the focus, work ethic, data driven instruction, and teamwork I observed.  We are hitting on all cylinders as a Professional Learning Community!   I want to thank all of our Staff, Students, Parents, and Volunteers for working together to make a difference.

I stopped in Mr. Endres Music class and the students were excited and engaged in their new learning. Second grade students were learning a system of organizing sounds in music called the treble clef and exploring the string instruments commonly found in the orchestra. The learning goals for these students were; I will learn the lines and spaces of the treble clef using the hand method , and I will explore the instruments found in the orchestra and around the world.  It's great to see Art, Music, and Physical Education back at West Clermont.  Good things are happening my friends!

Weekly Update From Mr. Winterberger

Happy New Year to everyone!  I'm proud to say our Staff, Students, and Volunteers have charged head-first into the new year in our Academic Classrooms.  We have come out of the blocks with a strong first week of school and I am proud of our Team.  I will continue to provide you candid updates of teaching and learning in our classrooms where your children are engaged in meaningful academics every day.  I wish everyone nothing but the best in 2015 and I'm confident together we will make this a special year for our students.

The classrooms at Summerside are the "Hub" of our school and I am in them daily, observing the quality instruction provided by our teaching staff.  I dropped into Mrs. Feldkamp’s math lesson on estimating and measuring liquid volume using liters. Earlier this year, the students learned how scientists measure volume and the tools and units that are used when measuring volume. The students were able to use their prior knowledge about volume, to discuss, estimate, and measure the liquid volume of different sized containers. The students had to estimate how many liters they thought it would take to fill up each container. Then, a beaker was used to measure one liter of water at a time and poured into each container. Once it was full, they identified the amount of liquid volume that the container could hold. The students recorded their information for each container in a table in their Go Math books.  Terrific work Mrs. Feldkamp and her Third Grade Scientist!!

Weekly Update From Mr. Winterberger

Hello Summerside Families!

It's hard to believe the month of September has flown by and we are headed into October. Fall is upon us.  What a beautiful time of year in Cincinnati.  In our daily lives things tend to move very quickly and sometimes we need to slow down and lift our heads long enough to enjoy the simple things that mean the most.  I was working  PM car dismissal this week and looking out in the back of our property at Summerside; and what a sight it is to see the colors changing on the trees. What a beautiful canvass to behold, nature at its best!   A special thank you to all of our families and staff that are working together to make drop off and pick up run safely and smoothly for our kids.  A sincere thank you to everyone!!

Teaching and Learning during the day is something I am extremely proud of at Summerside.  We just completed a great month of September in our classrooms.  I will always showcase one of our classrooms every week and this week is Mrs. Simmons’ first grade class.

Today, Mrs. Simmons' 1st grade class practiced decoding and reading words fluently.  They listened to individual words, determined the vowel sound and held up their vowel letter tents for Mrs. Simmons to see.   They read 3 letter words to multiple friends in the classroom and then finished by reading their sight word poem of the week to each other.  The poem was about pets.  The students are using this poem in their literacy block to help them study about the needs of pets.   There is nothing more enjoyable than observing a great teacher work with a great group of kids in a classroom.  Super job Mrs. Simmons and her First Grade Class!!

Weekly Update From Mr. Winterberger

Hello Summerside Families!

I hope all is well and that you are having a great week.  We are having a strong week in our classrooms and I always lead off my update with our Teaching and Learning in the classrooms.  This week, I will be featuring Mrs. Hayden's second grade classroom.   Every day I stop in multiple classrooms and keep my finger on the pulse of the academic work taking place there; and we have just completed a strong academic week in our classrooms.  Mrs. Hayden’s students were being introduced to synonyms, practicing matching synonyms in their Reader's and Writer's Notebooks, and finding synonyms for words from their weekly selection, Congratulations Mrs. Hayden's class!  Great job!!

Our students are always learning and growing and it's crucial that we have that same mentality when it comes to our staff at West Clermont.  On September 26th, there will be no school for students it is a professional development for our staff.  They will be engaged in learning best practice strategies which will be applied in our daily work to improve student learning.  I can assure you our team will be engaged in meaningful skill building to improve our productivity.

Weekly Update From Mr. Winterberger

Hello Summerside Families,

I attended the Board of Education meeting on Monday, December 8th and a presentation was given by Dr. Kline detailing key improvements that are coming to West Clermont to ensure we are the school system of choice for families.  Many exciting changes are coming that will improve how we do business and serve our families and their children with a first class education.  Detailed information from Dr. Kline is included in this edition for you to review.  He will be speaking at our February 19th PTO meeting at 6:30pm to provide a brief update of these positive changes coming to our district. Good things are happening!!  A sincere thank you to Dr. Kline (our Superintendent) and the Board of Education for their Leadership!

Our staff and students are working hard in our classrooms.  I stopped in Mrs. Feldkamp’s 3rd grade classroom and the students were practicing telling and writing time using AM and PM. In 2nd grade, the students learned to tell time to the five minutes and in the 3rd grade they expand on that knowledge, by learning how to tell time to the one minute. The students took their time telling skills even farther and learned how to use AM or PM to describe a time of day.

Weekly Update From Mr. Winterberger

Hello Summerside Families,

As we head into the Thanksgiving holiday, I tend to reflect on the many things to be thankful for: our families, our close friends, the community we live in, our school community, and the people who make a difference in our lives with a simple kind word.  I want to wish everyone a fun-filled upcoming Thanksgiving vacation.  There will be no school for students on November 26, November 27, and November 28th.   Have a safe and enjoyable Thanksgiving with your family.

We have had a great week of Teaching and Learning at Summerside.  Our work ethic is strong heading into the Thanksgiving break and I couldn't be more proud of our staff, students, volunteers, and our PTO.  Typically, I showcase a classroom every week. However, this week I want to showcase that "kids learn from teachers; and teachers learn from kids"!  Last week, we had a training session where one of our teachers (Mrs.Karen Kunkel) taught a lesson to a small group of students while several of our teachers observed the process to hone their teaching delivery, to use Junior Great Books effectively with the skills groups and to challenge their students in the classroom.

Weekly Update From Mr. Winterberger
Hello Summerside Families!

Each week my goal is to provide our families a snapshot of the important work taking place in the most important part of our school, which is our classrooms.  I was in multiple classrooms this week and one of them was Mrs. Feldkamp’s Third Grade. Her students were practicing solving one and two step word problems. The students practiced together as a whole class on the small
dry erase boards; and then they solved a few problems working with a partner. The students were encouraged to look for addition or subtraction "key words" like total, sum, difference, and left over. Hats off to all of the students in Mrs. Feldkamp’s class. Super job!

Weekly Update From Mr. Winterberger

Hello Summerside Families,

It's hard to believe we are in the month of December already and we are closing in on the Winter Holiday.  Time flies when you are having fun!   We have 3 weeks of school in the month of December and I can assure you we are making the most of every day at Summerside.   Just today, I stopped in Ms. Finke's  Language Arts Class and the students were engaged in a Poetry lesson analyzing the main idea and theme of the poem "I Dream A World".  Our students were focused and excited about their new learning in the classroom.  Super job Ms. Finke and her classroom.  We had a great week of teaching and learning in all of our classroom this week!

Our 3rd grade students took the 3rd Grade Reading Assessment in the fall.  All parents of 3rd graders at Summerside will be mailed their student’s results on Wednesday, December 10th.  We are working to ensure 100% of our students not only meet the Reading target, but that our students excel on this assessment.  I'm confident we will deliver the results due to our focus on strong academics every day.  Our hard work will pay off!

Weekly Update From Mr. Winterberger

A heartfelt hello from Summerside Elementary!!   We had a great academic week in our classrooms.  I couldn't be more proud this week of our staff and students.  We are rolling up our sleeves and making a difference in our classrooms.  We are focused and on target academically.  Great job everyone!

I am proud to say we lifted off with our first week of Art, Music, and Gym.  What a sight is was seeing our kids excited and back in their Unified Arts Classes!  West Clermont is on the move and this is another example of our district moving forward and making a difference.  We'll continue to strive to work hard to provide our kids with the top notch school day they deserve.   Working with your children is a gift that I do not take for granted.  It is a privilege!

Calamity Day Update from Superintendent Kline

At this time, West Clermont has lost 8 days of instruction due to inclement weather. Those dates are 12/6, 12/10, 1/6, 1/7, 1/21, 1/28, 2/5 and 2/6. The first five of those are covered under current law. The two February days are being counted as days of instruction through the use of Blizzard Bags. At this point, calamity day #6 (1/28) still needs to be made up.

GEHS students will participate in county-wide mock emergency drill

Twenty Glen Este High School students have been invited to participate in a Mock Emergency under the direction of The University of Cincinnati Medical Center and the American Red Cross.  As a part of the Glen Este High School Health Education Curriculum, Instructor Joan Stear has for years used “Moulage” (Special Effects Makeup) as a teaching technique for instruction of types of wounds during her first aid curriculum.  According to Ms. Stear, “Creating the fake wounds on their own arm helps the students demonstrate learning in a concrete way!  Using their skills to help create fake injuries in a mock disaster training drill drives that knowledge home.  I know of no more rewarding situation than to use your knowledge to help save others!"

Weekly Update From Mr. Winterberger

Hello Summerside Families,

We are having a great week of school at Summerside.  Our classrooms are humming right along this week.  The classrooms are the heart of our school and I have been impressed with our focus and work ethic.  A letter will be sent home with all students today which has the process that parents can apply to access
their child's information such as interim reports, quarterly grades, and most importantly daily work.  Progress Book is your vehicle for staying in direct touch with your child's academic work at Summerside.

One goal this time of year is to get into a nice daily flow of business, to work on jelling as a school family, and to build our academic stamina in the classroom.  The good news is we are right on track and I see our student confidence building daily.

Family is important!  As we work through the school year and the many twists and turns that occur during the year, I want everyone to know together we can tackle anything.  I want you to know I view you as family.  Our Staff cares about you and your children!

Feel free to contact our school office if you need assistance at 947-7901 or feel free to contact me on my direct cell line at 373-5735.  Have a super weekend with your family and friends.

Weekly Update From Mr. Winterberger

Hello Summerside Families!

Wow! We are having a great week in our academic classrooms. I have been in multiple classrooms and we are right on track.  Our classrooms are the "Hub" of our school and one subject that is crucial is Reading. This week I stopped in Mrs. Alexander and Mrs. Beavers’ Reading Skills Group classes.  All students at Summerside receive 30 targeted minutes daily of small group reading at their reading level.  This is in addition to their core reading class time.

Reading is the foundation for all learning in all subject areas and I can guarantee you that it is a priority at Summerside every day.  Mrs. Beavers’ first grade skill group was reviewing letter names and sounds, as well as correct letter formation.  Students were practicing listening comprehension as Mrs. Beavers read a story aloud to the group. These bedrock skills will prepare her students to excel in reading.  Super job Mrs. Beavers and her students!!  Mrs. Alexander’s

first grade skill group was working on decoding short vowel words and reading fluency.  Students were practicing listening comprehension as Mrs. Alexander read a story aloud.   As you can see these two first grade skills groups are working on specific skills tailored to the students’ needs.  We are differentiating instruction to meet individual student needs.

Weekly Update From Mr. Winterberger

Summerside Families,

We are closing in on our first full week of school and I couldn’t be more proud of what our students, staff, volunteers, and families have accomplished together as a Team.  We are off to a great academic start. The Academic Work taking place in our classrooms daily will be our priority focus during the school year.  Our Staff’s charge is to provide engaging academic lessons that challenge and excite your children about learning.  I have been in multiple classrooms daily and we are right on track.

Many new improvements have been added in the West Clermont Schools to provide opportunities for our students and families. We have much to be excited about! We have added 45 minutes of academic time to this year’s school day, which we are committed to using wisely to increase student learning.  We now have on-site before and after school extended daycare, which is an excellent option for our working parents who need child care.  More good news!  A special thank you to Child Focus who operates this quality program. We also have added K-Plus as an option for families who have Kindergartens. Another new quality option!  Last but not least, we will add back Art, Music, and Gym for grades 1-5 on a rotating basis one week per month. We are excited about this for our kids! The week of September 8th will be our first rotation. For your planning purposes, First Graders will have Specials on Monday, Sept 8th, Second will have Specials on Tuesday, September 9th, Third will have Specials on Wednesday, September 10th, Fourth on September 11th,  and Fifth on September 12th.
