From Pam Sargent, Director of Food Services
Ohio Senate Bill 210, also known as Healthy Choices for Healthy Children, was implemented beginning July 1, 2011. This bill establishes nutritional standards for certain food and beverages sold on school premises during the regular school day, as well as during periods before or after the school day in which students are participating in
school-sponsored extracurricular activities, academic or enrichment programs, or latchkey programs. This includes vending machines, foods sold for fundraising, school stores, as well as foods sold ala carte in the lunch program.
The food served must follow the nutritional guidelines of the Alliance for a Healthier Generation (http://www.healthiergeneration.org/). This website has the guidelines for food sold as well as a list of products that meet requirements and a product calculator which can be used to
determine if a product qualifies for sale.
Beverage guidelines are defined by the bill and are tiered according to grade level.
