Kiwanis Club members are gearing up to help students in need with ReadyFest West.
ReadyFest West is 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 15, in the Glen Este High School cafeteria, 4342 Glen Este-Withamsville Road. It is an annual event for West Clermont students in kindergarten through fifth-grade on the free-and-reduced-price-lunch plan.
“There is definitely a need out there,” said Kiwanis member Linda Bloom. “We have a lot of students who go without.”
District officials do not know how many students will be on the plan for the 2013-2014 school year, but trends show the number of students applying continues to grow, said Superintendent Keith Kline.
“There are some young people who need that extra support,” he said. “This event fills that gap.”
In 2012, former Superintendent Gary Brooks said about 40 percent of West Clermont students were eligible for the free-and-reduced-price-lunch plan.
At ReadyFest West, children can get free backpacks, school supplies, underwear and socks, Bloom said.
“What we saw was a need for kids to be able to start off the school year with the (necessary supplies),” she said.
Free haircuts will be offered, as well, Bloom said.
To participate, students must have proof of need from their school or a medical card and proof of residency, such as a utility bill or rental agreement. If a student recently enrolled in the district, proof of enrollment may be required as well.
The event is organized by the Kiwanis Club of Union Township and is supported with donations from various churches, organizations and businesses, Bloom said.
“We get anybody involved who wants to be involved,” she said.
Donations of supplies or money are accepted, she said. To make a donation, contact Bloom at 544-7340.
