West Clermont to Build New Field House through Partnership with Mercy Health
Monday, June 15, 2020
The 2020-21 school year marks year three of a five-year partnership that the West Clermont School District has with Mercy Health Physicians Cincinnati and Mercy Health Clermont Hospital. As part of this agreement, the district has received funds to construct a new field house on the campus of West Clermont High School.
The construction of this building - including the architect fees - will be at no cost to the district's general fund and will be paid for completely through the Mercy Health Sports Medicine Agreement. As part of this agreement, Mercy Health and Wellington Orthopedics have secured the naming rights.
Lance Perry, director of operations for West Clermont School District, explains, "This facility will be a fantastic resource for our students and community. We are so grateful for the generosity of both Wellington and Mercy Health. In support of our district's dedication to fiscal responsibility to our taxpayers, not one penny from West Clermont's day-to-day operating funds will be used in any part of the construction of this project, which speaks volumes about the incredible value of our community partnerships."
This 6,000-square-foot, pole-barn structure will include baseball and softball batting cages, hitting nets for boys and girls golf, indoor training rooms for fall and spring sports, and plenty of space for team meetings, practices and hosting other large activities like Eastern Cincinnati Conference (ECC) events.
"By allowing us to keep our students on our campus for practices and training, the field house will increase the safety of our students and will serve as a great resource to the entire district," explained James Collins, West Clermont High School athletic director.
The list of athletic, extra-curricular and co-curricular groups that will potentially benefit from the new field house are many, including baseball and softball, track, soccer, football, band, wrestling, cross country, and fall, winter and competition cheerleading. "This space will also be a welcome place for in-school clubs and PE classes. Truly, the whole school benefits from the creation of this structure," added Collins.
Currently the agreement that the West Clermont School District has with Mercy Health Physicians Cincinnati and Mercy Health Clermont Hospital provides the district with full-time sports trainers from Wellington Orthopedic and Sports Medicine at both West Clermont High School and West Clermont Middle School. In addition, the district receives $25,000 per year for social and emotional wellness programs and $5,000 per year to fund scholarships for students pursuing a post high school degree in a medical field.
The construction of the field house is scheduled to begin the first week of August and is projected to be completed by mid September.
